In honour of World Mental Health Awareness Day, I am sharing posts by Beth Beattie, co-editor and contributing author, and Michael Ferguson about The Right Not to Be Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in The Legal Profession. I am honoured to be included in the community of authors who have shared their stories so powerfully and eloquently. I am humbled by the response the book has received and its contribution to the essential dialogue about mental and health and wellbeing our profession must continue to have. "The Right Not to Remain Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in the Legal Profession is an insightful resource that provides a candid exploration of mental health and substance use challenges faced by the legal profession. The authors are raw and honest in their description of their accounts of their own mental illness and substance use and they create space for those in the legal profession to share their own stories. Typically the legal profession has shied away from discussing mental health. Lawyers, firms, judges worried that discussing it would jeopardize their reputation in the community and with clients – this book is groundbreaking in its ability to dismantle that stigma.?It also offers valuable perspectives and practical strategies for law firm leaders and practitioners to support their lawyers’ and their own mental health. Understanding the unique stress of legal practice, this book is an essential tool for fostering a supportive workplace culture where mental health is prioritized." Eowynne Noble (She/Her), Chief People Officer at Fasken Thank you, Eowynne, for your comments about the book. A theme that weaves its way through the stories in the book is HOPE. My fervent hope is that combined with many other initiatives about this important topic, we can eliminate stigma and normalize conversations about mental health and the challenges we face. #therightnottobesilent #mentalhealth #mentalhealthatwork
In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week, I'm posting the below quote from Madam Justice Michelle O'Bonsawin of the Supreme Court of Canada who read The Right Not to Remain Silent: "I want to thank the authors who shared their journeys.?It took incredible strength for those involved to open up and their honesty is inspiring.?Their voices matter, and by sharing, the authors are helping others feel seen and understood.?I am proud that these individuals are part of our legal community." Addictions come in many forms, and stress is the root of so many of them. The most basic of addictions, the addiction to comfort, is often the root of why we choose numbing agents such as shopping, eating, alcohol, drugs, or so many more. Because we #LovedJennie, we want to raise awareness of the roots behind mental health issues and their often tragic outcomes. Join us in spreading the word!
Legal Operations Guru, Blockchain/DLT enthusiast, Legal Innovation Seeker, College of Law Practice Management Fellow
Part of the mission of the Middle Tennessee Association of Legal Administrators #LovedJennie project is to raise awareness of the realities and facts surrounding the mental health challenges in the legal industry....right here in our own community. As this article discusses, stress drives addictions. We need to practice psychological flexibility to make a difference and let go of outcome-based goals.

It is Mental Health Awareness Month, an important time to shine a light on the challenges facing individuals affected by mental health issues. As lawyers, we work in an inherently difficult profession, so the intersectionality with mental health is a serious issue. I wanted to thank Carole Dagher for her openness, bravery and contributions to our profession on this topic. Most recently, she has coeditored a book "The Right not to Remain Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in the Legal Profession." I just ordered my copy. The link is in her post below for you to do the same. All proceeds support CAMH, so let's all contribute to becoming more knowledgable, understanding and part of the change that is needed. #mentalhealth, #inhouselawyers, #generalcounsel, #lawyers
Yesterday I appeared on Breakfast Television for Mental Health Week to discuss, among other things, an important topic that affects many in the legal profession - the intersectionality of mental health and high-functioning individuals. As a coeditor of the book "The Right not to Remain Silent: The Truth About Mental Health in the Legal Profession," I had the opportunity to speak about the challenges faced by those who excel in their legal careers while also battling mental illness issues that may go unseen because they are invisible to others. One of the themes we explore in the book is the concept of imposter syndrome, a common struggle for lawyers and professionals in demanding fields. This book dives deep into the complexities of mental health in the legal profession and aims to break down barriers and spark important conversations. I encourage you to consider purchasing a copy of "The Right not to Remain Silent" as all royalties from the book are being donated to CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health). Your support will not only help raise awareness but also contribute to vital mental health resources and research. Let's work together to create a more supportive and understanding environment for mental health in the legal profession. The world should follow this
What a brave move from the government of Australia: banning children under 16 from social media! As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "??????? ?????? ???? ?????? ????? ???????? ?????? ????????. ???????????? ?????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ??????? ???? ???????? ?????? ??'?? ?????????????? ???????? ???? ????." The law has not been passed yet and they are not sure how to implement and enforce the ban. Do you think banning children from social media is the solution for countering its mental health impact?

If your loved has been Baker Acted, and they are being detained on a voluntary admission basis, you should allow the lawyer to revoke consent, you should not let them try and do it on their own, and you should not try to do it on their behalf. There’s a reason that we’ve been successful in getting hundreds and hundreds of people released from Florida’s draconian mental health system, and understanding the RTR (the request to release) and how it really works, is critical. #mentalhealthawareness #legalhelp #bakeract #mentalhealthrights #floridalaw #advocateformentalhealth #knowyourrights #mentalhealthsupport #releaserequest #mentalhealthjustice https://lnkd.in/ePArHVCP https://lnkd.in/gseuQqzK https://lnkd.in/eidebh6e
