IS YOUR COMPANY DRIVER SAFETY A GAME OF CHANCE? Does the following scenario sound in any way familiar? Business owner to Health & Safety manager: “I need you to sort out our driver safety.” H&S manager to business owner: “I’m unsure about that boss, I’m all about the safety of the building and the outside yard, isn’t this one for the fleet manager?” ? Business owner to fleet manager:?“I need you to sort out our driver safety.” Fleet manager: “My job is about buying new vehicles and selling the ones we no longer need. Surely this is people management, isn’t it, why not ask HR? Business owner to HR manager: “I need you to sort out our driver safety.” HR manager: “Hang on boss, my team is already overworked with recruiting and onboarding staff, dealing with contracts of employment, training, any disciplinary matters, isn’t this one for the H&S manager? And round and round it goes. Does the buck ever stop? Who are you going to call? Maybe a driver safety expert who can put procedures in place, has training programmes and can use technology to help your staff stay safe? Can I help? An expert outside eye can make all the difference. ?

Fleet Safety Management: A Valuable Resource for Fleet Operators Managing a large fleet comes with numerous challenges, from ensuring driver safety to maintaining operational efficiency. While navigating these responsibilities, I came across the "719 Fleet Safety Management" guide by OSHAcademy, which has proven to be an exceptional resource. The guide dives deep into vital aspects of fleet safety, including: ? Developing effective Fleet Safety Plans ? Responsibilities of management, supervisors, and drivers ? Best practices for driver training and evaluation ? Detailed procedures for vehicle inspections and maintenance ? Guidelines for accident investigations As someone involved in overseeing extensive fleet operations, I see this guide as more than just a manual—it's a blueprint for cultivating a proactive safety culture. Implementing its principles not only reduces accidents and costs but also builds a foundation of trust and responsibility among team members. I encourage all fleet management professionals to explore resources like this to drive safety and excellence in their operations. What strategies have worked for your fleet's safety management? Share your insights below! #FleetManagement #SafetyFirst #LearningAndDevelopment

Seek the next safety superstar from within! As a safety director, identifying and nurturing talent within your organization is crucial for maintaining a strong safety culture. Here are some science-based ideas to help you seek and identify suitable safety professionals internally: 1.???????Think Ahead: Anticipate future safety needs and consider the skills and competencies required. Look beyond immediate vacancies and identify potential talent early on. 2.???????Focus on the Right Traits: Adaptability: Safety professionals need to adapt to changing regulations, technologies, and workplace dynamics. Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with safety software, data analysis tools, and digital reporting systems is essential. Effective Communication: Clear articulation of safety protocols, effective training, and leading by example are critical. Be Data-Driven: Use data to assess performance and identify high-potential individuals. Look at safety metrics, incident reports, and compliance records. 3.???????Hire Internally: Leverage existing talent pools within your organization. Consider employees who have shown interest in safety or have relevant skills. Internal hires often adapt faster to the organization’s culture and processes. 4.???????Be Inclusive: Encourage diversity in safety roles. Different perspectives enhance creativity and innovation. Consider cognitive diversity alongside demographic diversity. 5.???????Consider Team Contribution: Evaluate how potential safety professionals will contribute to the team as a whole. Look beyond individual skills to their impact on team dynamics. 6.???????Never Stop Developing People: Invest in continuous learning and development. Provide mentorship, coaching, and networking opportunities. Remember, safety professionals play a critical role in ensuring compliance and fostering a culture of safety and health. By knowing the potential internal talent, you can identify and develop them within your organization effectively. Safety is a belief before it's a behavior. Understanding Your Workers as a Safety Officer "As a Safety Officer, I've come to realize that understanding my workers is the cornerstone of effective safety management. It's not just about enforcing rules and regulations, but about genuinely knowing the people who make up our team. When we take the time to understand our workers, we: - Identify potential safety risks and prevent accidents by recognizing individual strengths and weaknesses - Tailor training programs to meet specific needs, ensuring everyone has the knowledge and confidence to work safely - Foster a culture of trust and open communication, where team members feel empowered to speak up and report concerns - Encourage active participation in safety initiatives, driving a sense of ownership and responsibility By investing in our workers, we're not only ensuring their safety but also: - Boosting productivity and efficiency through a healthy and happy workforce - Enhancing morale and job satisfaction, leading to reduced turnover and increased retention - Building a positive and supportive work environment, where everyone feels valued and respected Let's shift our focus from just compliance to genuine connection. Let's prioritize understanding and empathy in our safety efforts. Our workers are our greatest asset – let's treat them that way. hashtag #SafetyOfficer hashtag #WorkplaceSafety hashtag #Leadership hashtag #EmployeeCentric"
