Well we made into Punta Arenas, though not without a battle. The southern tip of Chile has always been a place of dragons and sea monsters swallowing whole ships and terrifying crews for hundreds of years. Watch the famous video if you've never seen it. Absolutely fascinating those men were hard as chiselled stone. Nowadays we know it's not superstition but it's everything you'd expect from a location where the longest mountain range in the world meets the South Pacific, Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans in one narrow spot. The Drake Passage. While we enjoy a privileged view from the flight levels above it still presents a host of challenges and risks to aviation. We got out of Rothera just ahead of some bad weather and after a short shuttle climb to get above the icing had a good crossing. Punta however had other ideas as the actual weather deteriorated rapidly at the end of our journey and quite opposite of the forecast. SCCI 081700Z 09015KT 9999 OVC003 11/10 Q0982 NOSIG Unfortunately with wind limitations we had only a non precision GPS approach available and on the first attempt we had some equipment failures resulting in a go around. The second attempt had to be made as a step down approach right to minimums in horrible conditions and we made contact at the last minute and we're able to land. Its one of those times you really appreciate how slow and stable the Goonie Bird is and it only needs 1/3 of most runways to land and take off. So Antarctica is behind us thanks to the combined effort of the Norwegians at Troll and the Germans at Neumayer who helped us load, fuel and go after dropping our final mission cargo. Special thanks to them, otherwise we would have missed that precious weather window. In case you were wondering what the precous cargo we waited for all week? Boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables for Neumayer. Seems silly to a person with a grocery store on every street corner but the brave over winterers at Neumayer will appreciate the last bananas, peaches and oranges they will see for the next 8-9 months!!! Road Trip! The Pan-American Highway the world’s longest from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Quellón, Chile, and Ushuaia, Argentina, with official and unofficial routes shown in Mexico and Central and South America. A few selected unofficial routes shown through the United States and Canada as they existed in the early 1960s. In 1966 the new U.S. Interstate Highway System brought official status to most previously unofficial routes in the lower 48 states. The Pan-American Highway[a] is a network of roads stretching across the Americas, measuring about 30,000 kilometres (19,000 mi)[1] in total length. Except for a break of approximately 100 km (60 mi) across the border between Colombia and Panama, the roads link most of the Pacific coastal countries of North America and South America in a connected highway system. According to Guinness World Records, the Pan-American Highway is the world's longest "motorable road". The Pan-American Highway passes through many diverse climates and ecological types—ranging from dense jungles to arid deserts and barren tundra. Some areas are fully passable only during the dry season. There is no official authority for its composition, but it extends in de facto terms from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in the north, to the southern cities of Puerto Montt and Quellón in Chile, and Ushuaia in Argentina.
