For example, the proportion of female train drivers at #EMR has risen to 12%, up from 7% in 2016, surpassing the ???? average of 8.5%. Notably, 41% of these female drivers are under 35. Only one week away! I'm excited to be representing EnGen at the conference. If you are trying to recruit more women (especially newcomer women) in trades or the construction industry I want you to ask yourself some questions: ? Who is most likely staying home with the kids, while their partner is taking language classes? ? Who is trying to take online English classes while multiple demands are required of them. (and just a note most online English classes are 2-3 hours a class, 2-3x's a week. Completely unrealistic for working adults with families or multiple jobs) ? Who wants to grow professionally but is unable to because they need more flexibility to improve their language to get promoted/gain credentials. I think we all know the answer. (And don't get me wrong, these questions could be for ALL women who are trying to learn and train. I've experienced some of this myself) It's time to think outside the box in how we support newcomer women in the trades/construction industry. Today I participated in an insightful discussion at the Women in Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Summit 2024. As a panelist in the CEO session on "Fostering an Inclusive and Respectful Culture," I found the exchange of ideas with fellow leaders to be both valuable and thought-provoking. Key takeaways: - The power of diverse perspectives in driving innovation - Strategies for creating truly inclusive workplaces - The importance of mentorship and sponsorship for women in our industry A personal highlight was sharing an anecdote that perfectly encapsulates why this work matters: My young son recently asked if, as a man, he could one day become a CEO like his mum. It was a poignant reminder that representation changes perceptions for all. My call to action: Let's amplify empathy and equality in our workplaces. As a champion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in trucking, I want to commend the impactful work of the Women of Trucking Advisory Board (WOTAB). Their dedication and actionable recommendations have been vital in making the industry safer and creating equitable opportunities for women. Last week, the NSW Women in Construction Program team held the inaugural Women in Construction Forum which saw around 200 industry leaders, unions, government agencies and government Ministers come together to discuss how we can create a more inclusive and diverse construction sector for everyone. We also released the findings from the recent Women in Construction Industry Survey. This survey provides valuable insights into the challenges and experiences women face in our industry, helping us shape initiatives to ensure women can remain and thrive within the construction industry. YourTV Halton was on the #skilledtrades beat when they featured Women in HVACR Canada! Our own Nathalie Brooks and Katie Hughes spoke to the local news network about WiHVACR Canada’s mission to spark women’s interest in the trades at a time when Ontario alone has approximately 30,000 #construction positions to fill across the province. “By encouraging women to even just see this as an option, we will be able to fill those gaps and make the industry more whole, well-rounded, more diverse,” Katie says. “We bring a lot to the table.”
