Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman! Multi-Strategy Hedge Funds use a diversified set of strategies to generate returns, aiming to balance risk and reward across dozens of trading pods. The best multi-strat funds do a brilliant job recruiting talent, allocating capital, generating returns, and managing risk across various strategies with internal investment teams that capture alpha in the capital markets ranging from equities, bonds, derivatives, to commodities. By employing diverse hedged strategies, these multi-strat fund managers can reduce risk associated with any single investment approach and shift capital among strategies based on market conditions and opportunities, while using leverage far in excess compared to most long-short traditional hedge fund managers. What I find surprising, is there is a growing acceptance to allocate capital to external managers, a deviation from discipline as additional risk, less control and potentially greater fees are layered in. The lines are not blurred. There is a big difference between multi-strategy managers who allocates capital to their internal teams vs. managers who deviate from this discipline to allocate capital to external fund managers. This begs the question, “Are you a fund manager or a Fund of Funds?” Why would a multi-strategy manager allocate capital externally? Perhaps it allows a manager to 1) allocate additional capital to put more money to work, 2) invest with a winning team that the fund manager can’t hire internally, or 3) gain exposure to a strategy beyond its reach. Large credit managers who run multi-strategy credit funds are often approached to allocate capital to third party managers for the purpose of gaining exposure to a strategy beyond their reach or invest with a young and growing firm in need of capital. In fact, many managers have talent teams that search for external managers to allocate to supplement their existing internal business. The most successful Fund of Funds today charge 50bps flat fee with no incentive fee, not 2&20! When investing capital at Marathon Asset Management, we only invest internally - never deploying capital via external managers. My team is dedicated to our diligent work at Marathon on behalf of our clients to identify investment opportunities, perform rigorous underwriting analysis, structure and close, and actively manage risk, all done internally. We had a scenario where a fund manager secures a $10 million commitment from friends and family for fund launch. However, during the onboarding process, it's discovered that none of them meet the qualifications as professional clients or elective professionals, typically preferred investor categories for hedge funds. Consequently, only half of the committed capital, $5 million, can be successfully onboarded. In the UK financial landscape, grasping the disparities between elective professional clients, per se professional clients, and eligible counterparties is paramount. Additionally, understanding regulatory standards, such as MiFID qualifications, is indispensable. To effectively address these considerations, prospective fund managers must: 1.
