Relationship between percentage of carbon vs mechanical properties of steel with process. Normally hardness and strength of steel are increased by heating the steel(C >0.4%) to above A1 line (say around 900 to 1100°C) and quenching suddenly so that meta-martensite structure stays. Good illustrative chart. For engineers: Adding a small percentage of alloying elements such as Chrome, Manganese, Vanadium, greatly changes the above Carbon-Steel Chart properties which is only describing pure steel with carbon added.
