This is a further examination of the connection between music teacher wellbeing and student progress. How do you feel about the idea that when things go well for our students, we naturally feel confident in our teaching abilities. And conversely, when things aren’t going well, we may experience self-doubt and question our expertise as teachers. Do you ever find yourself experiencing self-doubt in relation to lack of student progress? Which of these three strategies resonate with you the most? What would you like to include? Please let me know in the Comments. DM me if you’ve got questions. To receive more ideas and inspirations, here's the Link to the TM21C Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g2XfC6Bu

Over on Threads (@musiceducationstrategist), we’re talking about teaching music students with anxiety. Sometimes, it’s not just “anxiety”- it goes much deeper than that. Being trauma-informed doesn’t require knowing what happened. It means understanding that something might have. It means creating a space safe enough for healing, while remembering that teaching music is our primary role. #musiceducation #traumainformedteaching #privatemusiclessons

Teaching Insight: Cultivating Analytical Skills in Students As educators, our responsibility is not only to teach technique but to foster a deeper understanding of music. Encouraging students to analyze the score away from their instrument can significantly enhance their interpretation and overall musicianship. Key strategies to incorporate into your teaching: 1. Pattern Recognition: Guide students to identify recurring motifs, harmonic progressions, and rhythmic structures. This strengthens their ability to predict and respond to the music. 2. Dynamic Interpretation: Teach students to closely examine dynamic markings, phrasing, and articulation. Understanding these elements allows them to perform with nuance and emotional depth. 3. Structural Analysis: Help students break down the piece's form and sections, giving them a clearer sense of direction and purpose when performing. By integrating these practices into lessons, we equip our students with the tools to become more thoughtful, independent musicians, capable of making informed artistic choices. How do you incorporate music analysis into your teaching? What strategies have worked best for your students? #TeachingInsight #MusicEducation #MusicalAnalysis #MusicPedagogy #NewparkAcademyOfMusic

Students enjoy listening to music while studying, but does it actually benefit them or does it act as a hindrance? Perham and Currie (2014) found that students who study in a quiet setting perform 61% better than those who listen to music, whether it has lyrics they like, dislike, or no lyrics. While music can enhance a student's mood during simple tasks, it can impede learning complex or new material. Many find that silence can be less distracting and more conducive to learning when studying new topics. This quiet environment allows for better focus and absorption of complex concepts by minimizing external noise and distractions. ???????? Classroom implication: If the silence in your classroom is deafening, play lyric-less music! #musicandscience #scienceclassroomvibes #concentrationinclassroom #distractionfreestudy #harmonyineducation #tuneintolearning #STEMinclass #melodiesofknowledge #scientificsounds #educationalsymphonies

Why do you want to integrate the arts into your teaching? What are you trying to accomplish? For example, when I integrate music listening experiences into my classroom, I am teaching students as much about the music and its meaning to us as I am using music to help us write great poems and stories. Students first experience the music (one song for one week), then they are ready to use those experiences to develop their writing skills. It takes effort to truly integrate the arts into your teaching and your students’ learning. Visit our blog post "What Is True Arts Integration?" to learn simple ways to start truly integration the arts into your classroom. https://ed.gr/crxaq

Creating experiences of wonder in the music classroom? My heart leaps up when I behold? ??A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began;? So is it now I am a man;? So be it when I shall grow old,? ??Or let me die! Extract of poem from William Wordsworth As music educators we want our children to develop this kind of lifelong passion for music. We want their hearts to ‘leap up’ to the wonder of it, rather than their heads to ‘focus in’ on characteristics or elements. We assess understanding of beats and rhythms, musical concepts... but how do we prioritize the emotional journey as musical stargazers whilst allowing intellectual facets to serve in the adventure? How might we consider changing standards and benchmarks and assessment to serve this endeavour? Here are some ideas based on experiences...children could have more experiences that provide: 1. Exposure to stories in music 2. Free movement to music 3. Free play with art materials to music 4. Free play with toys to music 5. Community and relationship building to music What experiences would have made you awe in the ‘wonder’ of music as a child? #musiccurriculum #musiceducation #musicteachers

A new year and new ways of exploring critical thinking education with the arts: music! Bojana Petrova explores how a song she listened to over the break, 'The Recipe' can make (business) students think about consumerism. And she even weaves in a documentary. Check her Recipe how to do this in your own classroom! https://lnkd.in/e5G95k7w
