Today we are highlighting the release of the latest paper in our More for Children Issues Paper series-Food Insecurity. Throughout The More for Children research we both heard and saw the reality of food insecurities facing children and their families. Children often arrived to the research workshops hungry. We heard from the children we spoke with about how they and their families struggled to afford the food shop, about their worry of the rising cost of groceries and the strategies they adapt to deal with this. We heard about their knowledge of parents skipping meals so that they wouldn’t have to go without. In this wealthy country, children should not have to go without access to high quality, nutritious food. Schools are doing a lot to provide children with meals everyday but what happens when children go home in the evenings, and when they are on school holidays, or when they go to highschool-all of which were worries voiced by children. Food charities also play an essential role in tackling food insecurity, but they too are patching underlying inequalities and injustice. Food insecurity is too common a reality for children in Australia. It is an issue that impacts on every aspect of a child’s life. More can and should be done to ensure that no child in Australia lives the with the daily reality of food insecurity. Job loss can quickly lead to food insecurity. Understand the impact and learn how you can take action to help those in need.
Feeding America has provided an updated Map the Meal Gap, which tracks the level of food insecurity in every U.S. County. The need in our community continues to grow: One in seven people and one in six children in the 26 counties served by the St. Louis Area Foodbank experience food insecurity. I live in Arlington, Virginia. It’s a place that's rich in diversity, food, and greenery. It’s also affected by food insecurity, with more than 23,000 people (nearly 10% of the population) not having access to enough food for an active, healthy life. These are just some of the eye-opening facts released this week as part of Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap Study (https://lnkd.in/ep7JimvB) —an annual, comprehensive view of how food insecurity varies across the U.S. As the only national study to provide county-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs, this study is a powerful tool for all of us to use to better understand hunger in our communities. It shows that food insecurity exists in every county, parish and congressional district in this nation, but it isn’t experienced equally. Food insecurity levels vary across regions, influenced by factors like unemployment and poverty rates as well as policies and practices rooted in history that continue to hold people back today. I encourage you to learn about the impact of hunger in your community. Spark conversations around the systemic factors that drive food insecurity then join the movement to end hunger (https://lnkd.in/enR6y7VC). Help us create a future where we all have access to the food and resources we need to thrive. #EndHunger

The faces of hunger may surprise you. Many who need assistance are middle-class families, the working poor, children, and the elderly. No one should suffer from a lack of access to quality and nutritious food – but they do. In fact, close to 1 million Hoosiers need food assistance. When two local organizations like Gleaners Food Bank and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield unite, we can make a profound impact in addressing the correlation between food insecurity and overall health in our region. https://ow.ly/aaGK30sAPv9

I like this commentary
Food Justice Advocate | Food Pantry Consultant | Bringing justice and dignity to the fight to end hunger
When you really think about it, food banking is all about the giver. We've created institutions to store food so that we can distribute it in ways we find appropriate. We've established a system that depends upon donations by corporations- who only participate for the tax breaks and financial benefits it brings (they can't argue they do it out of the kindness of their hearts until they start paying all their staff a living wage.) Partner agencies develop programming around the interests and availability of volunteers rather than clients. I'm a food banker, and I love this work. I also see the irony of advocating against my own industry. But after fifty years of fighting hunger with this model, it should be easy to see that this is not the right answer. Given that we must work with the resources available, it is essential that emergency food assistance programs shift our perspectives. It's time to recognize and uplift those with lived experience of hunger by ensuring that we build programs that meet their needs, even when they feel awkward or uncomfortable or don't align with what society has taught us about hunger. There is incredible energy in this movement right now, with room for innovation, growth, and change, and I'm digging into it at www.whodeservestoeat.com. Subscribe so you never miss a post!

Everyone should have the means to afford enough nutritious food. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many households in our region. Household food insecurity means a household does not have enough money for food. In 2021-2022, 19.2% of households in the Southwestern Public Health region (Oxford County, Elgin County, City of St. Thomas) were food insecure. That's almost 1 in 5 households.
