Critical Mentoring, a powerful tool Mentorship is a powerful and essential tool for inspiring, guiding, and equipping individuals, particularly within the Black community, to achieve personal and professional growth. It provides the necessary support and resources to help people bridge the gap between where they are and where they aspire to be. 86% of CEOs surveyed by Vistage in 2020 agreed that mentors were a crucial part of their career accomplishments Our recommended book for the week will equip you with strategies for mentoring effectively. About The Book This book introduces the concept of critical mentoring, presenting its theoretical and empirical foundations, and providing telling examples of what it looks like in practice, and what it can achieve. Critical mentoring places youth at the center of the process, challenging norms of adult and institutional authority and notions of saviorism to create collaborative partnerships with youth and communities that recognize there are multiple sources of expertise and knowledge. Torie Weiston-Serdan outlines the underlying foundations of critical race theory, cultural competence and intersectionality, describes how collaborative mentoring works in practice in terms of dispositions and structures, and addresses the implications of rethinking about the purposes and delivery of mentoring services, both for mentors themselves and the organizations for which they work. Each chapter ends with a set of salient questions to ask and key actions to take. These are meant to move the reader from thought to action and provide a basis for discussion. This book offers strategies that are immediately applicable and will create a process that is participatory, emancipatory and transformative. About The Author Torie Weiston-Serdan is a scholar and practitioner with over eleven years of teaching and youth programming experience. She received her Ph.D. in Education from Claremont Graduate University at the age of 30 and has dedicated her life and career to teaching and mentoring young people in her community. As a scholar, she examines how marginalized and minoritized youth are served by mentoring and youth development programs. Passionate about young people and armed with a firm understanding of educational institutions, Dr. Weiston-Serdan is a strong education and community leader who is using her voice to advocate for youth voices. . . . . #mentor #mentorship #blackcommunity #personalgrowth #success #goals #productivity #workplace #organizationalculture #employeesatisfaction #employeeengagement #leadership #humanresources #employeewellness #workculture #hr #workplacewellbeing #employeeexperience

There’s a quote I’ve always loved, one that quietly whispers the power of change: “Inclusion is not a place, it’s a mindset.” It’s a reminder that as teachers, we don’t just teach subjects; we shape futures. I recently stood at the front of my classroom, watching my students—each so different yet connected. I realized then that inclusion isn’t just about making space, but about creating belonging. It’s the student who hesitates to speak, knowing their voice will be heard. It’s the learner who struggles, knowing they have support. And it starts with us, the teachers. Our role isn’t just to instruct but to empower. We have the ability to ignite change in how students see themselves and how they see the world around them. Inclusion isn’t a checkbox—it’s the heart of education, the soul of every thriving classroom. When we empower teachers with this mindset, we open the door to limitless possibilities for our students. And maybe, just maybe, we change the world. #Inclusion #Empowerment #Education #Teachers #DiversityAndInclusion #InclusiveEducation #TeacherLeadership #StudentSuccess #Belonging #ChangeMakers #FutureOfEducation

?? Reflecting on the Power of Mentorship ?? Over the past years, I've had the privilege of both receiving and providing mentorship. Each experience has been invaluable, shaping my journey in ways I couldn't have imagined. Mentorship is more than just guidance; it’s about building meaningful relationships, sharing wisdom, and witnessing transformation. I'm extremely grateful to Benny Andersson, who taught me precious lessons about leadership, to Arturo Jose Garcia, whose support was invaluable during my last job transition, and to Ollie Davidson, who shared the secrets of fundraising with me. I’m also thankful to Magnify Mentoring , which allowed me to experience the other side of mentorship by mentoring an incredibly talented and inspiring young activist, Frances Logan. These experiences have taught me: ? Personal and Professional Growth: Being mentored has provided me with invaluable insights and guidance, while mentoring has taught me that teaching is often the best way to learn. ?The Joy of Giving Back: There’s a unique joy in helping others navigate their career paths and watching them succeed. ?Network Expansion: Meeting and connecting with diverse individuals has enriched my professional life immensely. I am thrilled to share that applications for the next cycle of the Magnify Mentoring program are now until July 1st! Whether you're looking to be a mentor or seeking guidance as a mentee, this is a fantastic opportunity to join a vibrant community dedicated to professional growth and support. ?? Apply now and become a part of this transformative journey! https://lnkd.in/dSz5as2Q Let's continue to build a culture of mentorship and make a positive impact on each other's careers. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the program—I’m more than happy to share my experiences. #Mentorship #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment #MagnifyMentoring #GivingBack #Networking

Someone asked me earlier this week, why do I mentor? Here are the 10 reasons I wish I had said: 1. I mentor because representation matters. 2. I believe in the transformative power of guidance and support to unlock potential and create opportunities. 3. It allows me to give back by sharing my experiences to help others overcome obstacles they may face. 4. I am passionate about fostering diversity in STEM fields. 5. When I watch someone succeed, overcome challenges, and develop into a confident professional, I am fulfilled. 6. Mentorship creates friendships and a sense of community, letting others know they’re not alone. 7. It’s a way to inspire the next generation to dream bigger, push boundaries, and contribute to their communities. 8. Mentorship is more than just sharing knowledge; it’s about instilling resilience, encouraging curiosity, and showing students that they are not alone in their aspirations. 9. I grow as a professional and an individual. 10. It’s my way of serving my community and living for a bigger purpose. I’ll pass on the advice I’ve received: have a mentor and be a mentor. How has mentorship impacted your personal or professional growth? #MentorshipMatters #STEMEducation #DiversityInSTEM #WomenInSTEM #LeadershipDevelopment #CommunityBuilding #CareerGrowth #Empowerment #GiveBack #InspireTheNextGeneration #PersonalGrowth #MentorshipJourney
