What is butterfly ?? effect? According to it our world is deeply interconnected, one small occurrence can influence a much larger complex system. A small butterfly flapping its wings could, hypothetically, cause a typhoon. Similarly our food system can impact the lives of people on this planet. Broken food system = Broken humans = Broken planet ?? Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a session with a remarkable group dedicated to addressing food security issues in our community. My key takeaway was about making a shift from a scarcity mindset to that of abundance. When we look at any problem through this lens, we recognize that we might already have enough resources at our disposal. It's not about lacking, but rather about reallocating and utilizing our resources more efficiently. This mindset shift empowers us to approach problems with creativity and optimism. Instead of focusing on what we lack, we can leverage what we have to make a meaningful difference. As government, nonprofits and other agencies navigate the complexities of addressing food security and other pressing issues, let's remember the power of abundance. Together, we have the potential to create positive change and build a brighter future for all.
Today, on May 28th, we stand together with the global community to recognize #WorldHungerDay, shedding light on the dire hunger crisis gripping our world. In the MEESA region, 1 in 5 people endure daily hunger, with a heartbreaking 52% being children. #Childhunger is not just a tragedy; it is a clear violation of #humanrights. It's time to change our mindset and recognize food as a fundamental human right. No child should ever have to suffer from hunger. Now is the time to unite and take action. Together, we can strive towards a world where no one has to go to bed hungry. Let's make food security a reality for every individual, everywhere. #WorldHungerDay #HungerCrisis #FoodCrisis
This month is Hunger Action Month (although, truth be told, every month is hunger action month as far as we’re concerned!) Check out this powerful video from the New Jersey Assembly Democratic Office. It’s especially relevant now, as our member pantries are seeing a 25% increase in the number of people turning to them for food support so far this year. Three key takeaways: 1. If you treat people with dignity, you build their trust and make a greater impact. That means offering a consistent variety of high quality, culturally relevant, fresh and healthy foods - along with just being kind and compassionate human beings (we see you, MEND pantry leaders!); 2. One of the biggest challenges for food security organizations is the infrastructure needed to do this work (we’re especially focused on how to make fresh food access a consistent part of the solution - which adds an extra layer to consider); and 3. No single person or organization will solve food and nutrition insecurity alone - it will take a cross sector, collaborative, community-led approach, and NJ is taking the lead on making this happen (proud to be working with the New Jersey Office of the Food Security Advocate, the Food & Health Equity Coalition of Essex County, and so many others in this work!)
