New Original Research article in RRH: Informing the surgical workforce pathway: how rural community characteristics matter by Dorothy Hughes, Joshua Mammen, Tomas Griebling and Joanna Brooks. https://lnkd.in/gFT7Uzpu Surgical care is limited in many rural areas, with a shortage of general surgeons contributing to this gap in services. This qualitative study explores the meanings surgeons associate with community characteristics to better understand the role that community plays in surgeons' practice location choices. Reflections around themes of physical environment symbolism, health resources' relationship to scope of practice, and overlap of professional and personal roles differed between rural and urban surgeons. The authors suggest that educators and rural healthcare organizations can improve recruitment and retention by better preparing potential rural surgeons for the expected role overlap and highlighting the value of the unique physical environment found in rural areas. #ruralhealth #surgeon #healthworkforce #ruralpopulation #us The University of Kansas University of Nebraska Medical Center Dorothy Hughes Joshua Mammen Tomas Griebling

New Publication Alert! We are excited to share our latest research publication: "Pre-operative planning for reverse shoulder arthroplasty in low-resource centres: A modified Delphi study in South Africa". This work is a collaborative effort between Pududu Archie Rachuene Roopam Dey, Ntambue Jimmy Kauta, Sudesh Sivarasu, Jean-Pierre du Plessis, Stephen Roche, and Basil Vrettos. The study addresses the expert consensus on RSA planning processes and rationale, focusing on practical, scalable approaches for surgeons operating in low-resource settings. The study aims to enhance pre-operative decision-making and improve patient outcomes through tailored guidance. The study involved extensive data collection and consensus building, addressing the intricacies of RSA planning with limited access to advanced imaging and intra-operative decision-making tools. We hope the findings will contribute to bridging the gap in surgical care quality and accessibility. Great news! The Leva Pelvic Health System now has the largest body of real-world evidence (#RWE) supporting the effectiveness and safety of an at-home, FDA-cleared treatment for female incontinence! The second study showing Leva's real-world effectiveness has published. This study shows women can access pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) successfully using Leva and mirrors the results of a similar 2022 RWE study. We have amassed significant clinical data showing that women can access PFMT successfully using Leva. Duplicating these results in real-world studies strengthens both data sets and underscores Leva's effectiveness for women. This is very powerful and unique in both women's health and urology. Thank you to the study authors, Evelyn Hall and Milena Weinstein, MD, FACOG, FACS and the co-authors from our stellar clinical team, Samantha (Mandy) Pulliam, Jessica McKinney, PT, DScPT, MS and Laura Keyser, DPT, MPH. https://lnkd.in/eWynz_5D #femaleleaders #data #research #pelvicfloorhealth #womenshealthmatters

Thursday 7 March ? It’s World Book Day in the UK, and our Chief Scientific Officer, Godfrey Smith, is not only Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology, Director of Innovation, Engagement and Enterprise, but a prolific author. ? If you’re looking for some of the latest work he has co-authored, ‘A novel method for the percutaneous induction of myocardial infarction by occlusion of small coronary arteries in the rabbit’, you’ll find it in the ‘American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology’, which can be accessed online at https://lnkd.in/eH5dpv96. With rabbits having similar cardiac electrophysiology to humans, they are important animal models for studying post-myocardial infarction arrhythmias, and arrhythmic sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a significant cause of mortality, following myocardial infarction. So we think you’ll agree that it’s an important paper! ? And for our more generalist followers, we thought we’d recommend something a little more straightforward, in Thomas Morris’s ‘The Matter of the Heart’. Using eleven operations as landmarks in the history of cardiac medicine and surgery, Morris charts such developments as the first human heart transplant and the trailblazing ‘blue baby’ procedure, right from the end of the nineteenth century when taboos around the mystery of the heart – which was previously seen as being too complex to touch, being the seat of the soul – began to be broken down by pioneering researchers. Especially touching is the story of one of the first artificial hearts, with the recipient’s wife asking the surgeon if her husband would still be able to love her afterwards. ? So, whether you’re after something technical or something a little more straightforward, we hope you find a few minutes today to lose yourself in a book! ?
