Dating is one of my favorite topics to write about, and my latest for The Wall Street Journal is no exception. With the price of restaurant meals up 17% and alcoholic beverages away from home up 12% since before the pandemic, daters are increasingly embracing frugality. The result isn't always pretty. One woman I spoke to woke up to a text requesting her half of the bill from a man who had made a big show of waving her credit card away the night before.? The text read, “Hey bb what’s your Venmo I need that dollar bad ??" She wishes she had only sent him back a dollar. https://lnkd.in/gTHjh_SR

I have a zoo membership that allows me to bring one guest. Back when I was dating, I often suggested going to the zoo because you could talk and get to know someone. The cost was already paid up front in my membership. It could be a fun day, or you could quickly find out if it was someone you didn’t want to be around after seeing them interact with the animals/others. Many museums, gardens, etc. offer these types of memberships, and as long as it’s budget-friendly and something you’d enjoy doing outside of a date, then it’s a great way to make a connection with others. Plus I never liked for the other person to pay because I wanted a way out without feeling beholden to someone for paying my way if the date was a bust.
