Entering the workforce as a Public Health professional (in my experience) feels like you're fighting an uphill battle. Despite the growing importance of Public Health—especially in a world still reeling from a global pandemic—the opportunities for recent graduates are often limited, competitive, or just all around difficult to find. The reality is that many of us recent graduates from MPH programs struggle to find meaningful employment that aligns with our skills, passions, and education. We've all been there: sending out endless job applications, attending several interviews, networking, and still not landing the opportunity that reflects the impact we’re eager to make. This gap isn't just about finding jobs—it's about creating visibility and accessibility to the opportunities that do exist in the field. It's about ensuring that Public Health roles, especially those that offer leadership potential, are visible and accessible to emerging professionals who will be the ones to help shape the future of the field. We need more investment in recruitment efforts that recognize the value of recent graduates and diverse public health professionals. Organizations must commit to building pipelines that connect us to meaningful roles, offer mentorship, and allow us to grow into leaders within the field. The future of public health depends on the next generation of professionals—those who are passionate, committed, and ready to drive change. But we need the infrastructure, support, and opportunities to get there.

US Federal Gov’t PATHWAYS PROGRAM- TLDR: paid entry-level fellowship with option to hire on full-time permanent Program Description: If you recently (previous 2 years) graduated from a qualifying educational institution or program, or are within 9 months of completing your education, there are entry-level career opportunities available under the Pathways Recent Graduates Program at HHS. As a recent graduate, you may be appointed up to the Grade 12 (or equivalent grade level), depending on your qualifications.” Following successful completion of at least 1 year of the program, participants are converted to a permanent career position (or, in some limited circumstances, a term appointment lasting 1-4 years) as long as they meet the qualifications for the job. [this is different than a general “recent graduate” position posted on USAJOBS] Salary: Salaries for most federal jobs operate on a GS scale. I will create a separate post on the GS scale at another time, but depending on your education level and/or years of relevant paid/unpaid work experience, you will be qualified for a specific GS-level. These amounts are further altered based on geography to match the cost-of-living in the area. Even with an “entry level” position, you should expect to make between $40,000 and $90,000 a year. Eligibility: Recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Veterans unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree, due to military service obligation, have as much as six years after degree completion to apply Training and Development: 1. Pathways Programs Orientation 2. Mentorship throughout the program 3. Individual Development Plan to create and track Recent Graduates' career planning, professional development, and training activities 4. At least 40 hours of formal, interactive training each year of the program 5. Rotational assignments (1-6 months) 6. Recent Graduate positions offer opportunity for career advancement

Public Health Career Conversations: Episode 1 – Dr Atiya Mosam One of the outcomes of the recent Public Health webinars has been the myriad of questions regarding navigating a career in public health. Given the numerous pathways to and within public health - from undergraduate background to postgraduate training options, to sub-fields of interest or specialisation, and even to jobs at different levels or areas within the health system - this question is not easily addressed through a catch-all answer. So over the month of May, I will be sharing a series of videos highlighting the journeys of some of my amazing Public Health colleagues who have taken the time to reflect on the decisions that led them to and through their Public Health careers, and their advice for the next generation of Public Health practitioners. We kickoff with an interview where I explain more about the impetus for this series and share some of my career reflections with the fantastic Kath Magrobi from the innovative Quote This Woman+, who has been an instrumental thought partner in honing this series. I would love to hear your thoughts and reflections on these videos, and since I have a sneaking suspicion that this may transcend the month of May, I would be thrilled to get more volunteers from all corners of the public health world for interviews. #publichealth #healthworkforce #publichealthcareers #publichealthcareerconversations #shareyourstory
