Last week I got to speak about one of my favorite principles of organizing and advocacy: staggered breathing. I wish I could remember who first taught me this analogy to credit them, because it’s been a guiding principle for me since. In essence: in a choir, singers stagger their breathing so a note is constantly being held, but everyone gets the chance to breathe. Organizing, justice work, and advocacy, require constant effort- but also come with the constant possibility of burnout. So, coalition members stagger our breathing. We work, we fight- we rest and breathe. In this way, the work is always being done- but those of us in it get to pause for self-care. #organizing #teamwork #coalitions #advocacy

At Different Journeys, our approach is rooted in genuine lived experiences, which shapes everything we do. Here's how we're making an impact: Events that empower: We create, fund and host events that allow autistic individuals and their families to connect, have fun, and support each other in a meaningful way. These gatherings are more than just events; they're opportunities to build a community of understanding and respect. Last year we held 232 events around Victoria and are set to trump that number in 2024. Advice and resources: We actively provide advice and resources aimed at empowering families, building capacity, and enhancing resilience. We support more than 1000 carers across 50 locations in Victoria. Advocacy for change: Mel Spencer spearheads Different Journey's advocacy efforts … and she's really busy doing it! This week has been incredibly rough for me, my family, and my friends. The onslaught of executive orders, funding freezes, and attacks on marginalized communities has left a lot of us in the nonprofit world feeling overwhelmed and demoralized. A lot of people I've spoken?to want to get involved in advocacy, but don't know how or what to do. I deeply believe that the best thing each of us can do is to find some way to help that capitalizes on our existing talents. And since I became an independent policy consultant in the last year, I am lucky to have some flexibility. So if you're an individual, nonprofit, or other socially-conscious organization with questions, I may have answers! While I can't offer legal advice, I can help answer questions such as: * What are the best and most realistic policy?projects that?your organization in particular?can focus on in order to protect your community in light of the?slew of executive orders and policy threats that we've seen in the last weeks?? * What do recent and potential policy developments mean for you?or your organization's programs?? * Who could you or your organization identify as natural allies, hosts, or supporters for policy-based advocacy? * What are some easy advocacy projects or fundraisers that you can take on to defend your values? While my capacity for unpaid consulting has limits, I'm happy to offer short, free sessions with a priority focus on motivated marginalized individuals and small nonprofits. Aaminah Parker from Kids in the Spotlight, Inc., a valued partner of The Center at Sierra Health Foundation's Elevate Youth California program, emphasizes the power of documentary-style storytelling.
