Why can't the price of the drug just be the price of the drug? Novo Nordisk launches a new price of $499 for Wegovy, but there is a catch... that is for cash paying customers only. If you are an employer, you will have to pay the list price of $1,349 minus a rebate that will get cannibalized by the GPO, rebate aggregator, health plan, and PBM leaving employers with the table scraps. Why though? Wouldn't you rather pay the $499 now without a rebate than monkey around with a fake $1,349 price point and create all that float? Manufacturers did it with insulins, they did it with PCSK9i's, they can do it with any drug so long as we stop propagating this love affair with rebates.
