A special renal tumor case: Tina is a 14-year-old mongrel dog who came to the FuzioVet Kft Animal Hospital to be examined by Dr. Péter Egerszegi. An MRI scan revealed a tumor in her left kidney. In order to make a more accurate diagnosis and surgical decision, we were asked to make a visualization of the affected region. The primary goal in creating the 3D model was to visualize this area in a way that it could give a clear overview to the surgeon not only from the diseased kidney but also the neighbouring main blood vessels which are important during a surgical approach. The complexity of the case was that the tumor had also grown into the vessels, i.e. the left renal vein and the caudal vena cava, which we were able to nicely illustrate! I built this page because I wanted to help veterinary radiologists?improve?their reports, to make our profession?significant?again, to?combat?the invisible radiologist ??. ? When Prof. Scrivani reached out to me to join the ACVR/ECVDI committee for the consensus statement on imaging report foundations?,?I was incredibly happy ??. It was a particularly busy time?in?my life, but I couldn't miss this?opportunity??? for any reason. It was probably my best chance to?make?an important,?pivotal?contribution?to the scientific community,?which?perfectly?aligned?with the reasons this page was created. ? Being part of this consensus was a great experience,?and it made me a better radiologist ??. I hope this statement?helps?others?improve?their communication in veterinary diagnostic imaging. ? It was a really?challenging?task, but Prof. Scrivani did an incredible job leading this group of amazing people and writing this masterpiece manuscript. ? Great article in last week's vet times by Manuel Pinilla on rational use of imaging modalities. There are many factors which may impact which imaging modality to choose and whether to image at all. And of course there is ultrasound too (not covered in this article as it may have been beyond the scope). The bottom line: Decision making regarding the need for further work-up and the imaging tests used during the work-up is complex and multifaceted. Sometimes, imaging will not affect the outcome, sometimes the answer can be achieved with a simple and relatively inexpensive test, sometimes a staged approach may be most appropriate and sometimes it may be most helpful -and cost-effective!- to use a cross-sectional (CT or MRI) examination as the first choice.
