?? International Internet Day! ?? On this day, we celebrate the internet’s power to connect, inform, and empower people worldwide. Within MeDeMAP - Mapping Media for Future Democracies, we understand the internet not just as a tool but also as a critical pillar for fostering transparent, inclusive, and resilient democracies. Our mission in the MeDeMAP project is to study the dynamic interactions between media and democratic practices, providing insights and tools to help reshape the media landscape for a healthier democratic future. International Internet Day reminds us of the impact the internet has on democratic engagement, freedom of expression, and access to diverse viewpoints. The internet remains essential for amplifying voices and ensuring that information is accessible to all—goals that are central to our project. ?? What’s next? A special roundtable during our next meeting in Lisbon! ?? Join the discussion here (Free attendance | Mandatory registration) - https://lnkd.in/dRQwTK_A ??The MeDeMAP team will meet again in March. Our next project meeting will take place in Lisbon between the 6th and the 8th. At it will end on a high note with a roundtable at the Lusófona University - Center University of Lisbon. On March 8, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., journalists, researchers and NGOs will come together to debate under the theme of "Media and Democracies - Strengths, Threats and Opportunities", in the light of the national and European context. ?? In a year in which European elections are taking place and several countries are also electing their new governments - like Portugal - and Europe is overcoming a difficult socioeconomic period, this discussion has never made more sense. There is a growing need to get the masses to reflect about the relationship between the media and democracies, considering the dynamics of the media and their impact on democratic systems, including society's political involvement and media consumption. ?? The panel for this roundtable is made up of professionals from the social and technological sciences who will discuss the topic at an event open to the whole community and free to attend, subject to prior registration here: https://lnkd.in/dRQwTK_A. ?? In my view, we European researchers should start adding 'European Union' to our affiliation when we sign a paper as an author, just after our country. This could help to make more visible the impact that EU-based research has. I have created the tag #AddEU to promote this idea @ec.europa.eu

??The Future of News Media Under Discussion in Krakow On September 18, MeDeMAP hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Reactivation: The News Media for Future Democracies.” The event brought together prominent experts from the fields of communication, technology, media, and democracy. Supported by Jagiellonian University, where MeDeMAP’s fourth project meeting took place, this roundtable initiated a debate on the critical role of news media in shaping the future of democratic societies. The four speakers examined how the media can be reactivated and reinvigorated to support and strengthen democratic processes in an increasingly digital and complex world. ?? WP3 - Legal and (self-)regulatory framework - How is MeDeMAP analysing european Media’s legal and (self-)regulatory framework? ?? ?? WP3 will provide to us an extensive analysis of the legal provisions, regulatory standards and self-regulatory mechanisms of the media operating rules in the European Union, both on the supply side (journalists work) and demand side (people communication and information needs). ?? The results of WP3 will deliver a comparative analysis of strengths and weaknesses of legal and (self-)regulatory frameworks against democratic requirements and insights into good practices and shortcomings. ?? Interviews with representatives of European associations, national media authorities and press councils, and NGOs based in the partner countries will provide crucial data to exploit these legal and (self-)regulatory frameworks. WP3 is being lead by Austrian Academy of Sciences with the participation of Charles University, Università IULM, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, COMMIT, ULHT, Tallinn University, IMT Atlantique, Mary Immaculate College, Ireland and Mirovni in?titut Metelkova 6, Ljubljana. AAU is on a mission to shape the future. Today, I had the privilege of discussing the next Framework Program with Cecilie Br?kner from Innovation Fund Denmark and Director General for Research and Innovation Marc Lemaitre in Brussels. The complex challenges facing our societies demand a fresh scientific approach. Collaboration among policymakers, businesses, civil society, and scientists from diverse disciplines is crucial. It's about setting aside disciplinary boundaries and working together from the outset. As universities we must actively engage in partnerships, knowledge circulation, and interaction with society around us. This collaborative spirit is at the core of AAU's mission-oriented approach. I firmly believe that universities play a pivotal role in driving change and prosperity, and by prioritizing mission-oriented research, we align with the goals of the European Commission and pave the way for meaningful progress.
