Technology Thursday - Power over Ethernet (#PoE) based building automation for improving energy efficiency and designing smart buildings. At #ClimateWeekNYC, I had the opportunity to tour the Cisco PENN1 facility. In addition to helping Cisco with its net-zero emissions goals, the facility is designed to attract talent and improve the workspace experience. ? A highlight for me was the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology through Nexos, a PoE-based IoT smart building platform from Igor, Inc. ??The system controls automated window coverings from Mecho using sensor data and weather tracking systems. It reduces HVAC and lighting system use, power consumption, and cost. Using PoE helped minimize PENN 1’s cabling, complexity, and carbon footprint. ?? Another system from Molex, helps optimize PENN 1’s subsystems and environmental conditions controlling and automating the lighting in the building’s common areas and workspaces ?? The facility was an excellent example of an intelligent, sustainable, and modernized work environment! ?? Bonus: While it was implemented to help Cisco with its net-zero emissions goal, it is also a great example of how sustainability can lead to new opportunities; Cisco now offers this solution to customers: Cisco Smart Building Solutions.
