Nothing better than meeting someone in person after seeing them only online?and catching that?glimmer of raw entrepreneurial spark that you rarely see.??Recently, I had the pleasure of catching up with Cath Strachan in person following an event held at Aberdeen’s ONE Tech Hub by Scottish Business Network & The Scottish GovTech Cluster. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the fireside session with Mark Elliott, the head of CivTech Scotland. If you haven't had the chance to hear Mark Elliott speak, I highly recommend it, especially for those seeking to be innovative in the tech space. His insights are not only intriguing but refreshingly honest, and he has reshaped my perspective on engaging with and supporting the CivTech Scotland challenges. After the event, Cath and I took the opportunity to sit down and get to know each other. Beyond her evident entrepreneurial drive, Cath’s knowledge and her commitment to fostering meaningful connections to support SBN & Gov Tech is very inspiring?and as a member of SBN,?I am very grateful for her support in this.? But that’s not the only string in Cath’s bow and somehow I knew it wouldn’t be ???I asked the question, “what else do you do aside from the SBN and the gov-tech stuff?”?I am so glad I asked this question as Cath went on to give me some really great topics that I need to think about practically for succession planning in my business, Cath's not just got many strings to her bow she’s got multiple bows !!! It's been a long time coming (18 months!) and it's only been made possible?with?the?help?of so so many in?our #startup ecosystem... but today we launched The #FounderResilienceResearch2024 Report, packed full of views and insights from nearly 400 entrepreneurs from around the world, making it the largest study yet on founder resilience. The mission here was not just to understand founder health and resilience, but to build evidence around what actually makes a tangible difference to surviving and thriving as a founder. With the help of so many founders, I think we've done that and started to build a roadmap for?navigating the life of?#founderhood. To launch it, I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at the Global Entrepreneurship Centres conference at Babson College in the US. It is somewhat of a whistlestop trip, but the reception to the report and how important it is for the ecosystem has made it all worthwhile. This session lead by Jean-Jacques Dordain with Guillaume de La Brosse, Head of Unit for Space innovation, Start-ups, Economics at DG Defence Industry and Space - European Commission, underscored the key role of startups bringing game-changing innovations and the importance of access to institutional contracts for these players. Thierry Breton made New Space a priority of his mandate. This is becoming reality, with Europe turning into a hub for space entrepreneurship. Insights on CVCs: Tatiana Jama at Maddy Keynote Last Thursday, our managing partner Tatiana Jama was a featured speaker on a panel focused on CVCs during the Maddy Keynote 2024, held at Palais Brongniart. ??? The Maddy Keynote brings together key players from the entrepreneurial, technological, and innovation ecosystem in France. ??During the 8th edition, Tatiana took part in the discussion "How to develop the role of CVCs as strategic investors?”, moderated by Sophie Levy Ayoun. This session provided insights on the role of CVCs in the startup ecosystem, featuring perspectives from Paul Midy, Pierre Brousseau (our own investor with FDJ!), and Philippe Huberdeau. ??A few insights from the panel: CVCs are pivotal in supporting first-time funds, facilitating the emergence of new GPs, and promoting diversity within the ecosystem. Traditional corporate entities, though imperfect, exhibit more progress in diversity and gender parity compared to the tech ecosystem. Hence, CVCs hold significant potential in effectively addressing diversity and parity issues within the ecosystem. ??
