HOW TO USE A WARNING LETTER EFFECTIVELY? Members often experience confusion when it comes to issuing Warning Letters. To clarify, a Warning Letter has various functions and effects depending on the context in which it is issued. SITUATION 1: POOR PERFORMANCE When given for performance issues, it serves as a reminder. SITUATION 2: MISCONDUCT On the other hand, when given for misconduct, it functions as the most lenient form of punishment. Therefore, it is important for the employee to be given the opportunity to have a hearing before receiving a Warning Letter via a Due Inquiry, which can be satisfied with a well drafted Show Cause Letter. At the lunch table an employee told another co-worker to chew food with their mouth shut. That employee complained to Line Manager on “Someone infringing their freedom to chew as they desire”. Line Manager called both the parties and told them to stop being stupid and eat at different tables if they have a problem with each other. Both the employees went to the HR head and complained about the Line Manager being insensitive. This Line Manager has now been sent on a training on “Handling Sensitive Conflicts”. #WorkplaceConflict #ConflictResolution #DisputeResoultion

How much time does your business spend managing formal Grievances? ?? How much time and money are wasted on lost productivity due to issues in working relationships? ??? ?? My top tip to address this… ??BURN. YOUR. GRIEVANCE. POLICY. ?? ?? Stop expecting to see positive change from a process which focusses on the negative, and encourages each party to become entrenched in their own position, rather than focussing on finding a positive way forward. OR (less dramatically)… - change it to focus on positive ways to resolve conflict in the workplace, - communicate these changes, - talk about these changes, -challenge managers and individuals to engage in meaningful, honest conversation, -provide the tools to enable these changes. If you’re not up for burning your Grievance Policy (and honestly, you really shouldn’t, it has its place), but you like the idea of fostering a more proactive and positive culture of conflict resolution – start with a simple policy update and comms plan.
