?? In the face of a decadelong drought and its consequential economic strains, many families in Nyeri, #Kenya, find themselves unable to afford the essential education their children deserve. It's a heartbreaking reality where admission to high school becomes a bittersweet victory, overshadowed by the financial hardships that make it inaccessible to talented young people.
?? That’s one of the reasons Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education professor Ndiangui, Dr. Peter Ndiang'ui created the Nyeri Diaspora Leadership Academy. Through donations by Southwest Florida non-profits and individuals, more than 30 #Nyeri children have had their school fees paid for in 2023-24. ?
?
?? I’m thankful I got to talk to Peter about the work he’s doing, and how he's involving Florida Gulf Coast University students from his #Colloquium classes.
?
? But what struck me most about Peter's story is his sense of purpose and gratitude. In his own words, "You say, ‘you have helped all these kids’ but I think I’m helping myself. It’s me. It is something so nice to be on that side, to be able to give."
?
?? As we navigate our own professional journeys, let's take a page from Peter's playbook to channel our resources, networks and expertise towards causes that matter. Peter is creating a world where every young #Kenyan has the opportunity to learn. We can do that, too, by supporting the NDLA and causes like it.
