Fascinating JAMA study — a clinical trial including 50 physicians found that the use of an LLM did not significantly improve diagnostic reasoning compared with the availability of only conventional resources. The kicker: The LLM ALONE did better than both physician groups. So having access to AI as a decision support tool alone doesn’t move the chains. You have to know how to use it. (I once wrote about this as the Health Technology Outcomes Gap https://lnkd.in/d7wqHskH) As the authors suggest: "Training clinicians in best prompting practices may improve physician performance with LLMs. Alternatively, organizations could invest in predefined prompting for diagnostic decision support integrated into clinical workflows and documentation, enabling synergy between the tools and clinicians."
