Baltimore Port opening Gain from 6 ships of 10,000TEU’s/week x 6months (starting 1Jul)/yr end = 1,5M TEU’s with cost of $1,900M bridge replacement & 140,000 workers affected. OR Cheaper(???) bridge and ultralarge container ship wharf. Gain from 4 ships of 24,000TEU’s/week x 8months (starting 1May)/yr end = 3,3M TEU’s with cost of $200M & assume 280,000 workers affected. ? Cost of $90M-$180M for COTS CC as blockwork quay wall, COTS Tower Cranes, asphalt decks & ramps, bridge beams as piers, bearing piles, & supports. ? Total material $47M+$8M+$80M= $135M high side estimate. ? Assembly time of 313hours => 39days at 8hr/day or 13days at 24/day. ? These COTS CC can be assembled at other ports and towed to Baltimore for locating in the desired position. If Boston, MA Conley Terminal Drydock 3 is used as a reference, then 6 cranes can each move 1 COTS CC into position in 2minutes for 180COTS CC positioned/hour = 52hours or 2days of 24hours/day. ? Advantages?: Inland infrastructure is more secure. This concept of using COTS CC in deep water off any shore that can support inland transport of COTS CC is cheap and fast to erect. Revere, MA has 2 bridges that are potentially threatened. Reduces accidental or intentional infrastructure damage. Proposed COTS CC off Revere’s Wonderland coast for $800M generates 500,000 homes, jobs in hydroponic gardens to feed 75,000 head of cattle, 300-400M lobsters, 15sq mile fishery with carbon sequestering seaweed/kelp, fresh water & sewage conversion to hydroponic fertilizer, 500MW offshore wind & solar energy, and 10,000 jobs at Boston’s Conley Terminal with a revenue stream of $3,000M/yr in year 5. ? Continuing on my post from last week, where we are sharing key insights into common failure modes with Silt Curtains and, more importantly, how to fix them. These posts are for anyone in marine construction who works with these products and are part of our internal Ecocoast, "Ecoversity" training program. In the second video, we’re addressing one of the most common issues in nearshore tidal installations involving reclamation – submergence of flotation. This is most often caused by a silt curtain that is either a) too deep for the actual location or tidal conditions or b) not installed far enough away from the reclamation. When reclamation material builds up on the skirt, the flotation may not be sufficient to free it when the water level rises. The fix? It’s simple – the general rule of thumb is to allow 0.5m between the base of the skirt and low water level and to keep it at least 50m away from the reclamation site. It doesn’t necessarily apply to discharge applications or non-tidal locations. We’ve created a simple animation to explain: ??
