Let’s talk tire service description. Hopefully you know what this means if you’re selling tires. I work with a wide variety of customers and conduct lots of training with them. I see way more often than I’d like that we don’t go the extra mile to properly sell tires to our customers. One of the biggest and worse ways is by searching tires by size rather than vehicle description or VIN # search. Why is this important to do properly? Many reasons actually. 1. Potentially unsafe if tire does not meet or exceed vehicle manufacturer specs. 2. Tires won’t perform properly if used above the tires speed and load characteristics needed from the vehicle. 3. If sold below vehicle manufacturer requirements many tire manufacturers will deny mileage wear out prorations. Worse case scenarios. You sell this way to all your customers. You do it again to the same customer using the same tire. You don’t know the manufacturer won’t pay the claim. You have open repair orders because payment hasn’t been collected from manufacturer proration. You write off repair order because you won’t get paid. If you’re a manager and these things happen to you but don’t invest in the proper training of your people, you’re part of the problem.

I heard the other day something that seems to be putting extra pressure on service departments. With the average car payment at $740 a month new car sales are slowing, days supply is growing, and floor plan expense is punishing. Used cars are getting far more attention. The Time To Line is forcing service departments to prioritize Used Car Recon. This is the right thing by the way because without fresh VINs in service the department dries up in a hurry. It shouldn’t but retention rates are poor at best so the top of the funnel needs refilling constantly. The other real option is to prevent a portion of the 90% of customer who defect long before they have 100k on their car. TraXtion can help with retention. How, by increasing tire penetration.
