As we approach COP29, global leaders are facing a critical question. How can we spark private sector action, moving beyond pledges to demonstrable progress? In a recent PJMF-hosted roundtable, PJMF partners Open Supply Hub and Climate TRACE set out to answer this very question, highlighting the critical roles of open source data, cross-industry collaboration, and participatory incentives for businesses across the globe. Gathering experts from across the sustainability space, the two shared insights on their efforts to build a unified dataset combining OS Hub’s world-leading global database of 745,000 factories and production sites with regularly updated, site-specific emissions estimates from Climate TRACE. Working with competitors usually isn't a great strategy! Understandably, businesses are reluctant to work with their competitors. But what if the earth depended on it? "Organizations of all sizes should put aside their competitive shields and begin collecting and sharing climate data and learnings. The earth depends on it." In this op-ed in TIME CO2, my colleague Dr. Alexander Schmidt shares insights on the importance of #carbon data collaborations between competitors for reducing emissions. Siloed and cherry-picked information prevents progress ?? Let's work together for a sustainable future! Normative.io

A denier? Participating in discussion forums is always engaging, informative, and relevant, especially when the topics are trending. Today I am a listener in one forum about ESG and I must add a counterpoint to some concepts and messages. I don't deny that human activity impacts the climate, contributes to social inequality, and affects governance.? Let’s get to the “E” issue with the upcoming COP30. When it comes to the environment, there are those who insist there is no climate emergency and others who warn of an impending catastrophe. I believe that both sides may have motivations that aren't purely based on the best interests of the planet and its inhabitants. I deny they, both, are pure in their motivations.? It's clear that human activities have far-reaching effects on our planet, and we should be more mindful of how we utilize resources and consume them. No group or industry is entirely pure in its intentions. Nor does it require further explanation to understand this. On the other hand, science has never been, is not, and will never be free from biases or self-interest. Science is done by people. And due to ignorance (yes, there are obtuse and ignorant scientists) or self-interest, we see the half-truths that abound.? I would like to delve into a few specific topics to further expand the discussion. I will start with the mathematical models that predict a catastrophe. Has anyone ever seen clearly how the mathematical models are built, what types of variables, the reliability of the data, or the model itself so that the general public? Why do we have to believe in such accurate predictions just because scientists said so? Additionally, I want to question the tendency to attribute extreme events solely to climate change, without considering other contributing factors. The current example in Brazil is the flood in Rio Grande do Sul. The event has demonstrated climate change, but also the incompetence of the government in maintaining prevention structures and relaxing regulations. We have not seen the discussion of the weight of these other factors to the result. Why do we assume it was just a climate emergency? Next, I want to question about the technologies that pretense will save the world. In this section, the one I like the most is the massive electrification of mobility. VE's are not new, but rather a progress of engineering. Adopting VEs can generate more greenhouse gases depending on the energy matrix. EVs have a huge impact on the mining of metals for batteries. So, why are we going to adopt “THE” massive electrification for mobility as a solution just because someone said so? In the end, I am a denier. A denier of the purity of the motivation of both sides. Ultimately, my suggestion is We have to question both sides before anyone of them sinks everyone.? #esg

The Sustainability team at Mission North often talks about the need for pragmatic progress toward climate goals. This sentiment comes through in our latest Dispatch blog Q&A with Jonathan Weitz, who leads sustainability innovation initiatives in North America at Accenture. In the piece he recounts a common question from large corporate clients: "What’s the art of the possible and the strategy of the practical in climate tech? How and when should we invest in these new solutions?" Give the full post a read for more on his answer to this question, findings from his most recent Climate Tech Solutions Map analysis (link in comment!), and the 3 climate myths he wishes would disappear: https://lnkd.in/gFHWCHsc #climatetech #sustainability #energytransition

Earth Day is coming up on April 22 ???? It’s easy to get discouraged by news like this, so just keep in mind we can all do our part! But insipid, vague ESG messaging is not the way. Here are a few pointers for staying grounded when communicating your brand’s sustainable strategies and achievements: - Actions speak louder than words ???? - Focus on concrete actions and how they address problems. Lofty rhetoric alone means less and less to people these days without this. - “We comply with XYZ standard/ UN Sustainable Development Goal.” ? - This won’t mean much to most people (and many journalists)—not to mention “comply” is so unsexy! Instead focus on the actions taken or commitments made IN ORDER TO make this compliance or receive a certain certification, showing how these “do your part” to address certain environmental problems. - Make sure you’re well informed of what your industry and competitors are doing ????♀? - What sticks out as ambitious or a “first” is much more likely to make news than following the herd. Knowing the landscape is the first step. #esg #esgcommunications #esgpr #earthday2024 #sustainability
