In 2024, several key state privacy laws have been implemented to enhance consumer protection across the U.S. Here’s a quick overview: 1. Utah Consumer Privacy Act: Targets businesses with over $25 million in revenue or that handle data of 100,000+ Utah residents. 2. Florida Digital Bill of Rights: Applies to businesses earning over $1 billion and mandates consumer rights regarding personal data collection and children's privacy. 3. Oregon Consumer Privacy Act: No revenue threshold; applies to businesses processing data of 100,000+ Oregon residents. 4. Texas Data Privacy and Security Act: No revenue threshold; includes small businesses under certain conditions. 5. Montana Consumer Data Privacy Act: Similar to Oregon’s, it applies to businesses processing data of 5,000+ residents. These laws reflect a growing commitment to consumer privacy. US House sets hearing for American Privacy Rights Act discussion draft: The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Innovation, Data and Commerce Subcommittee will host a 17 April hearing focused on several data privacy and online safety bills up for house consideration, including the proposed American Privacy Rights Act. The committee will also debate the proposed Kids Online Safety Act, proposed updates to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and more. Rhode Island's comprehensive privacy bill marked by omissions: A comprehensive privacy bill cleared the Rhode Island General Assembly 13 June and awaits potential enactment by the governor. The bill, slated to take effect 1 Jan. 2026, is drawing critical reactions from stakeholders for lacking connectivity to provisions found in other comprehensive state privacy laws, including recognition of universal opt-out mechanisms, enhanced children's privacy protections and a definition for personally identifiable information.
