Summer is over and that means the intern must return to campus. We were fortunate to have Seth Stratton intern with McDaniel-Whitley Inc this summer. "Seth brought us a set of skills that we were able to immediately utilize to the benefit of our clients. The summer was short, but we incorporated Seth in several components of agency operations. We now consider Seth part of the McDaniel-Whitley team", said Richard Whitley, CIC, CBIA, President of McDaniel-Whitley. Seth, we hope you have a great senior year at the University of Mississippi, University of Mississippi - School of Business Administration. #insurance #riskmanagement #surety #suretybonding #future

In this Student Success Spotlight, Michael Isaac shares his internship experience and his advice for current and incoming business students. He says, "Don’t be afraid to say yes to opportunities; when you get too comfortable you are only stopping yourself. Do what you can and say yes to every opportunity as long as you aren’t compromising integrity." Michael is a senior economics (pre-law track) major with an insurance and risk management minor. The kids are alright....but we need to support them! For the past three summers I've had the pleasure of discussing financial literacy and financial futures with Greenwood Project interns. The thoughts of this summer's interns, Anthony Armstead, Arelys Estrada, Adin Farmer, Imani Noel, Kai Washington, and Manny Wiley are insightful and important for all of us to consider. #InvestingInvolvesRisk

Now that I’ve finished my first two weeks of the Spring 2024 semester at the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis ??, I’d like to reflect on some fantastic advice Daniel Banks, my Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) mentor, gave during our touch base. ???? He said that the best early-career tip he would give any young professional would be to ask questions when they need to. ??♀? Making up something on the spot is NOT the way to go. ?? Instead, admit you don’t know, ask the appropriate questions, and accumulate knowledge for the next time that situation arises. ?? Daniel Banks’ advice reminded me of my Charles Schwab internship experience. When taking inbound calls ??, I was often tempted to “make things up” to the best of my ability when a #Schwab client asked a question I was uncertain about. ?? However, I quickly learned that it was far more productive—and better for the client’s long-term financial future—to admit I wasn’t sure ??♀?, confidently tell the client I would seek help from the appropriate sources ??, and ask a more knowledgeable #Schwabbie for clarification. ?? As a young professional, you have far more leeway to ask questions. ?? It’s expected that you won’t know everything. ?? Take advantage of being new and relatively inexperienced to learn as much as possible from the talented people around you. ?? It’s 110% worth the temporary nervousness. ?? #IUI #IndianaUniversity #IUIndianapolis #Inspiration #Motivation #Learning #Leadership

So many excellent observations in the responses to Jeff Selingo's post asking what students need to do IN college for success afterwards! I offer similar ones and others (seek faculty/staff/peer mentors, be a mentor, engage with the career center's resources, network with alums and others, study abroad, engage in extra curricular activities, develop executive functioning skills, be a student leader, connect with a campus leader, learn and use proper email etiquette with professors and administrators, take steps to get a job, learn about and use campus resources, and many more) in a road map for college success that I developed based on my three decades of supporting college students. The road map (https://lnkd.in/eFaCU2yD) outlines five main areas of focus with action items in each:? 1. Wellness 2. Academic Success 3. Know and Use Your Resources 4. Build Your Community 5. Create Your Future

On one of my many plane rides this past week, a mother was telling me how her 24-year-old son failed to launch after college. I told her about the resarch for "There Is Life After College" where we surveyed hundreds of young adults to figure out what they did IN college to help them AFTER college. We separated them into three groups: Sprinters, Wanderers, or Stragglers in the race to adulthood. While we imagine that most college grads start out as Sprinters, only one-third of twenty-somethings do (each group is about 1/3 in size). None are defined by one set of qualities, but Sprinters share several attributes: ?? A job in high school to understand the nuances and basic requirements of the workplace. ??Picked a major early on in college and stuck with it, which allowed them to dedicate time to outside-the-classroom pursuits. ?? Internships. 79% had at least one internship in college. ?? Less than $10K of student-loan debt, freeing them to pick job opportunities without regard to pay. What else do you think students need to do IN college for success afterwards?

As 2024 comes to a close, one lesson has stood out for me above all: take the risks you’re scared of taking, and don’t let fear keep you from chasing what you truly want. In January, I made a bold decision that changed everything—I quit my jobs to start my own company. It wasn’t easy, and the fear of failure was overwhelming, but my passion for building something meaningful outweighed the doubt. Today, that risk has paid off, and my business continues to grow in ways I never imagined. This year also taught me the incredible power of putting yourself out there. When I reached out to law firms, not knowing if I’d hear back, I opened doors I didn’t think were possible. Those efforts led to a summer internship, mock trials at the Royal Courts of Justice, and work experience with Broadfield UK . These experiences weren’t handed to me—I had to go after them. So here’s my message: the sky isn’t the limit; it’s just a checkpoint. Your goals, your ideas, your passions—they’re all within reach, but only if you dare to step out of your comfort zone. Fear of failure is natural, but don’t let it stop you. Take the leap. Bet on yourself. You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of achieving. Here’s to 2025—a year for even bolder dreams, bigger risks, and limitless possibilities. #motivation
