Does"corked" wine have pieces of cork in it? Here's a popular wine myth that causes people to throw away perfectly good wine. It is a common assumption that a "corked" wine contains pieces of cork, however, this is incorrect. "Corked" wine, also known as cork taint- refers to a wine that has been contaminated with a compound called TCA or 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole which creates offputting odours in the wine and ruins its taste. This compound is a result of mould formation on the cork of a wine bottle and the faulty aromas can be so strong that it leaves the wine undrinkable. So if you see some pieces of cork in your wine, it could simply be because the cork crumbled when you tried to remove it. But the volume of wine in a glass is very important — even more important than the shape of the glass. A standard pour of wine is usually around 5 ounces. You don't want to fill your glass to the brim and risk spilling, but you also don't want to shortchange yourself on a good pour. The reason volume is more important is simple: In order to elevate the flavors and aromas of wine, you want to expose it to air.
