July is #MinorityMentalHealthMonth, and youth #MentalHealth continues to be a topic of great importance among public health professionals. Our commitment to improving the mental health of historically underserved students recently took center stage at the National Network of Public Health Institutes Annual Conference in NOLA. Courtney Stefan, Manager of IBX Foundation Initiatives, presented "Student Mental Wellness: A Social Impact Model in Education," which highlighted the Foundation's support of an ongoing Philadelphia school-based mental health model developed with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and piloted at Girard College. School-based mental health care is emerging as a critical component in assessing and addressing the well-being of today's youth. Meeting children where they are and providing the right level of support and intervention is key. When mental health care is prioritized within school communities, it strengthens students' well-being inside the classroom and beyond.

?? Strengthening School and Mental Health Agency Partnerships: 3 Key Strategies ???? Supporting our youth's mental health is a vital task, and effective partnerships between schools and mental health agencies are key to making this happen. Here are three tips to strengthen these essential collaborations: 1?? Clarify Expectations: It's crucial for everyone involved—teachers, school counselors, social workers, and agency staff—to know their roles clearly. This not only helps in aligning goals but also in easing the integration of services across different tiers of support. 2?? Professional Collaboration: By learning from each other and sharing resources, schools and agencies can enhance their collective ability to support students. Regular professional development sessions can help ensure that staff across both settings are equipped with the latest strategies and knowledge. 3?? Ongoing Evaluation: Regularly assess the effectiveness of the partnership and the satisfaction of the families involved. This can lead to improved strategies and adaptations to meet the evolving needs of the community. ?? NEW from the JSSA Training Institute: Earn 2 Category I Continuing Education credits at an upcoming free session designed to help mental health professionals equitably serve diverse communities. This session is made possible in partnership with JSSA’s Healthy Minds Fairfax Youth Advisory Council. A little more background … Research has shown that Hispanic, Black, and Asian populations experienced worse rates of anxiety and depression than their non-Hispanic, white counterparts during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, even before the events of 2020 and 2021, we know Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)-identifying Americans received lower-quality care, while many were unable to access mental health services at all. The training will begin with a presentation to contextualize the issue and present best practices. This will be followed by a panel discussion of BIPOC transitional-age youth who will share their experiences of mental health and accessing care. The session is free and open to the public. Today, Centre for Mental Health and Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) have published a new report exploring who is missing from school and the links between school attendance and mental health. We - our staff, youth ambassadors and parent/carer lived experience partners - welcome the report, entitled 'Not in school: The mental health barriers to school attendance'. It outlines the barriers to school attendance including rising mental health problems, access to timely support, racism, discrimination, bullying and poverty. These need to be addressed and there are clear recommendations to do so. At Charlie Waller Trust, we can help education providers with our whole education approach to mental health and wellbeing, and families with a child or young person who is struggling with school attendance via our Parent/Carer Peer Support Programme.
