Lessons from Every City #53 Denver, CO---This message is not meant for those that are facing a serious medical condition, where they have no choice other than to breathe. This is meant for those that are going through a difficult situation but are physically able. As the saying goes, time heals. Well, for all that life throws at us, life is too short to wait to heal from every trauma. In Denver, I struggled with a situation that I had no control of besides my response. I found myself walking the streets for hours, biking for miles, even laying on the grass in parks constantly replaying the past like an old recording. It was a cycle that wouldn't stop. Transitioning to a new chapter, I made the bold decision to sell my home, enroll in a Master's Program at the University of Minnesota, and reinvent myself. Through distraction and a fresh focus, I found healing and growth in unexpected ways. For those facing tough times, it's vital to acknowledge that healing is not always linear. Sometimes, the best way to navigate through trauma is by embracing change and finding a new purpose. I found that by leaving Denver for a new destination. Remember, amidst life's challenges, finding new purpose and embracing change can lead to profound healing and personal transformation. On the other side of it, we all want to live our best lives, where there are no worries and stress. #LessonsLearned #Adversity #PersonalGrowth

My coauthors Cliff Mallett OAM, Svenja Wolf, Julia Schwender, and I just published on the role of individual and interpersonal emotion regulation in sport teams, a project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation ?? Team sport athletes experiencing a collective performance collapse tend to regulate each other more, but rely on less effective regulation strategies, which leads to the experience of depletion. Have a look:

This is an excellent article by fellow International Society for Quality of Life Studies members Prof M. Joseph Sirgy and Moshen Joshanloo. They investigated 33 European countries and found that work-life conflict harms affective and functional well-being directly and indirectly by reducing work and family satisfaction. https://lnkd.in/dQwygzPA

Excited to see this! ?? Having studied with Lara Mossman and attended a session with Austin Chia, PhD during my MAPP last year, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one. If you’re interested in the nitty-gritty of research on academic wellbeing, I highly recommend you do the same! ?? Why it matters: Understanding the science behind academic wellbeing is essential—not just for students, but also for educators striving to create healthy, high-performing learning environments. #AcademicWellbeing #PositivePsychology #MAPP #ResearchMatters #WellbeingInEducation
My research focuses on enabling environments, which includes coach and educator wellbeing. This chapter discusses the impact of casual and fixed-term employment on academic wellbeing at work and in life more broadly. This collaboration is particularly meaningful to me because I worked with two amazing people who studied the Master of Applied Positive Psychology and went on to complete their PhDs. Thank you, Austin Chia, PhD and Alexandra Johnston, for including me in this project. The book is out this week.

Learning about the neuroscience of well-being has been such an incredible gift to me both personally and professionally. Through the work of the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) developed by the Trauma Resource Institute and the work of Dr. Richard Davidson, at the Center for Healthy Minds, I've learned how to with intention and attention use simple, biology based practices to integrate into the already bustling and busy work day and life. Dr. Richard Davidson teaches about the 4 Constituents of Well-Being that through plasticity of our brains we can enhance and increase individual and collective well-being. 1.) Resilience Circuit - Resilience is the rapidity with which we recover from adversity. 2.) Positive Outlook Circuit - The ability to see and recognize the positive in others and the ability to savor positive experiences. 3.) Attention Circuit - Emotional well-being is liked to the ability to pay attention. 4.) Generosity Circuit - Engaging in generosity reliably activates brain circuits that support well-being. Read more in this article: https://lnkd.in/gaTmuGaN Watch to learn more in this video: Here Davidson teaches about the 4 Constituents of Well-Being. https://lnkd.in/giQWFyRU By learning and practicing this we can intentionally develop, strengthen, and cultivate our well-being!

One of my most inspiring professors during my education was Dr. Daniel Frankl, who taught my sports psychology class. We shared a common interest in ancient history, and he often incorporated it into his teachings on performance enhancement in sports psychology, a course I took nearly 15 years ago. The quote below from Marcus Aurelius resonates deeply with the teachings I received from Dr. Frankel. In the high-pressure world of law, maintaining mental well-being is crucial. Two profound perspectives offer invaluable guidance: Marcus Aurelius' Stoic philosophy and Daniel Frankl's modern insights. Marcus Aurelius once said, "Choose not to be harmed—and you won't feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed—and you haven't been." This Stoic principle emphasizes the power of perception. By controlling our responses to external events, we can mitigate stress and maintain our inner peace. For attorneys, this mindset can transform how we handle challenging cases and demanding clients. Instead of viewing setbacks as barriers, we can see them as opportunities to grow and learn. Daniel Frankl advocates for mindfulness and self-care. He emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries, practicing gratitude, and engaging in regular reflection. Frankel’s approach aligns with Aurelius' philosophy by promoting a proactive stance toward mental health. By prioritizing our well-being, we become more resilient and effective in our practice. By blending the timeless wisdom of Marcus Aurelius with Daniel Frankl’s modern strategies, attorneys can foster a healthier, more balanced approach to their careers. Let’s choose not to be harmed and actively care for our well-being daily. #AttorneyWellBeing #Mindfulness #Stoicism #MentalHealth #LegalProfession #Resilience

During my undergraduate studies in History, I was intrigued by ancient history, especially the Stoic philosophers. I read their books and tried to find ways to adapt many of their teachings to my athletic and academic career. I truly appreciate this piece from Alen Voskanian, MD, MBA, FAAHPM, FACHE. One Stoic concept that can significantly benefit athletes, physicians, and lawyers is focusing on what is within their control and letting go of what is not. For athletes, this means concentrating on their training, effort, and mindset rather than external outcomes like competitors' performance or the weather. Physicians can apply this by dedicating themselves to providing the best possible care and staying updated with medical knowledge while accepting that some patient outcomes are beyond their control. Lawyers, similarly, can focus on preparing their cases thoroughly and advocating effectively for their clients, understanding that the final judgment is not always in their hands. Embracing this Stoic principle can lead to reduced stress, enhanced performance, and greater professional satisfaction across these demanding fields. #stoic #wellbeing #wellness #growth #mindfulness #lawyerwellbeing #lawyer #physician #law #medicine #kinesiology #psychology
