"Remember -- your love for bacon can make a big difference!" Funny, but true. There is a serious side to this too. The Walworth County Food and Diaper Bank is a great organization, and symbolic of many which are responding to food insecurity in our communities. In our particular case our Bank serves, at some point during the year, about 5 percent of our county's population - distributing $5M of food across 16,000+ guest encounters. All of this is made possible by roughly 120 volunteers whose work seems never ending. Those we serve are primarily referred to as ALICE (asset-limited, income-constrained, and employed). In other words, neighbors in situations where one car repair, medical bill, or unexpected expense can force a difficult decision about food. A full 40 percent of those we serve in a year come only once. 70 percent receive food from us four times or less in a year. In our county, and probably yours too, up to 35 percent of our residents fall into the ALICE classification. Those are really staggering numbers when you think about them. Why? ??Affordable ??High Protein ??Variety of Use Thanks to leaders such as Monica Bassett of Stronghold Food Pantry, our food insecure MilVet community is able to receive donations like peanut butter. Below is another episode in my Hellman's Kitchen Budget Friendly series, which is part of the mission being led by Jordan J. Foley of Let’s Chow. The idea is to teach those receiving food donations to use those ingredients wisely, in order to stretch the food as much as possible. ?? Monday lemonade recap: days 25, 26 and 27. ?? Over the weekend, my business partner Will Moss and I put my MBA to the test. The first ever 'Big Squeeze' lemonade stand launched Saturday afternoon in Union Square. The process started weeks ago, with a logo and 150+ custom labeled mason jars. I secured a street fair vendor permit from NYC, bought a folding table and we were good to go. Lemonade stands are not a novel concept, so we thought including the mason jar with every purchase may differentiate us a little bit. The night before, I peeled 100+ lemons and soaked the peels in sugar overnight (oleo saccharum, google it, shoutout Heili Springsteen), and juiced 100+ lemons for fresh squeezed juice the day of. Truly, the lemonade was delicious, probably the best I've ever had. Maybe I'll jar it one day ?? Investors? Possibly you! In ~4 hours, we sold 120+ jars of lemonade, just under 10 GALLONS of lemonade, and will be donating all profits to the Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (yes, we made a profit! Thanks NYU). Now, you may be asking yourself, 'what's next for The Big Squeeze?' Step one is a LinkedIn learnings post (obviously). Step two? Open to ideas... Learning 25: Success takes a village. With a successful business, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Learning 26: Feedback is critical. We had every customer give us a 'live first sip' review, and it helped us better sell the product throughout the day. Learning 27: Lean into your differentiators. The Big Squeeze made a mistake by not advertising 'oleo saccharum' or 'fresh squeezed,' and many assumed it was powdered lemonade. Would certainly change that the next time around. Our signage was great though!!! Yes, I have extra jars if anyone wants any (i.e. I have minimal space in my apartment to store them...). EDIT: shoutout to Kim Hays, who hasn't killed me for storing 150 mason jars in the apartment for a month ??

Now that it's Spring ?? we are thinking about salads! Salads are the perfect food. Yeah we said it. They are healthy, quick, easy to make and have endless possibilities. As busy parents, having to make dinner every night can be tedious and exhausting. A simple, quick and easy go to is the salad! With endless possibilities on ingredients you can use whatever you have in the fridge or pantry. My wife and I love watching the Great British Baking Show (you can find it on Netflix).?It’s a reality show where amateur bakers from around the United Kingdom compete against each other to be crowned the UK’s Best Amateur Baker.?It’s hilarious, emotional, stressful, and hunger-inducing. One of my favorite segments is the “technical challenge” where the contestants are given a few key ingredients with minimal measurements and instructions for how to complete the challenge (such as Treacle Pudding, which turned out to be one of the hardest technical challenges ever on the show).?Many of the technical challenges are not nearly as hard as Treacle Pudding, but the greatest bakers know how to mix the recommended ingredients to create something special and memorable, AND hopefully receive the all-elusive-hand-shake from Paul Hollywood.
