A closely watched project that will add more than 1,700 apartments to Jersey City’s booming Journal Square neighborhood is on the verge of two key construction milestones. Its developer, Kushner Cos., says the first phase of what’s known as One Journal Square is more than three months ahead of schedule and will top out by April, as crews complete the steel frame for the 64-story, 966-unit north tower. The firm at that point will also start vertical construction on the second phase, where plans call for another 757 units atop the podium that’s been built to support both structures. I walk down 9th Ave most mornings and pass these two amazing towers of Brookfield Asset Management’s Manhattan West development. Some interesting facts about MW: (1) the project was conceived of in the 1990’s, received permits in 2014 and hit substantial completion in 2021, becoming the second-largest project in the Hudson Yards Redevelopment. Brookfield actually has owned the site since 1985; (2) amazingly, due to limited terra firma, 1 Manhattan West sits on foundations representing only about 30% of its footprint, almost as if it’s standing on its toes; (3) being built over the West Side Rail Yards a platform costing $680 million needed to be constructed, in some areas using 75-foot long steel “kickers,” to support portions of 1 Manhattan West and the pedestrian corridors above. The sloping facade of 1 Manhattan West gives you a unique view at every angle, and you’ll notice there’s no columns on the curtain wall of the main lobby - definitely one of my favorite buildings in the city! #HudsonYards #CRE #BackToWork #NYC

On Monday, August 12th, Andrew Watkins and the JZMK team, alongside City Staff, presented an update on the Moraga Canyon Specific Plan with the Piedmont Planning Commission. The workshop aimed to gather support and feedback on the proposed architectural styles for the new multifamily residential development. The Planning Commission provided valuable insight and endorsed the proposed styles. Once the Administrative Draft of the Specific Plan is ready, the Commission will review the full document and offer additional feedback.
