I shared this post last week but want to share this story I recently read along with it. My 4 oldest sons all got their start in the working world by working on farms, as did I. One of the boys recently began a career in his chosen field and when being interviewed, the manager reading his resume said “Oh you have experience working on farms, I love hiring farm kids, they really know how to work.. Please read this.. but most importantly if your an employer hire the kid that worked or grew up on a farm.. If your child is looking for a job, talk to a local farmer about this great program. 'Just' a farm kid is a job prospect extraordinaire By Rudy Taylor "Are you hiring?" she asked. We said probably not, but we're always looking for good resources, such as part-time photographers and writers. "We'd be happy to take your resume," I told her. Then she said something that stuck with me. "I'm afraid my resume wouldn't be too impressive," she said. "I've spent all my life working on my parents' farm. I go to school in the daytime and do chores morning and night." Whoa. I told her to go home and create a resume, and write down exactly what she had told me. She knows about dependability and getting jobs done on time. The morning school bus won't wait until a farm kid finishes those chores. They'll be done on time or the young student will miss that all-important ride. A young person, who has put up hay, helped her dad and mother in the farrowing house or candled eggs has something more than words to jot on a resume. Farm kids don't need to take art appreciation classes in school. They witness picturesque landscapes, sunrises and changes in seasons as they grow up. Farm kids learn to keep good records on their livestock. When they raise and sell a 4-H calf, they can calculate the profit gained after deducting feed, vet medicines and other costs. They typically know how to stand on their own two feet and give project talks, or give oral reasons for judging a class of lambs or swine. Many of them earn leadership roles in church, 4-H or FFA, so they can moderate a meeting to perfection using Roberts Rules of Order. They learn early in life the tactics of conservation --- how to keep topsoil from washing into Oklahoma; how to plant wind barriers and how to recognize grass-cheating weeds that need sprayed. Any farm kid can handle a paint brush, spade a garden, pull worms from tomato plants, gather hen eggs, mow grass, groom animals and take one grain of wheat, bite down on it and determine if it's time to start the combine. And, this girl thinks her resume might be lackluster? Oh, I don't think so. Put her to work in a hardware store, newspaper office or grocery store, and she will enter the front door looking for things to do. It's that way with kids who grow up as farm and ranch kids. Their resume is written on their foreheads and in their hearts. They should never apologize.

Hired as Field Operations Managers last year, Will Batson and Jarret Fowlkes of Commercial Maintenance have been promoted to Junior Account Managers. ? “They are proactive, client-focused, and detail-oriented,” Customer Relation Manager Josh Wilder said. “These promotions are well-deserved, and we are excited to see Jarret and Will continue to thrive in their new capacities.” ? A graduate of Mississippi State University, Will joined Michael Hatcher & Associates in July 2023. Jarret, who graduated from Christian Brothers University, has been part of our Team for nine months. Both said they love our company’s camaraderie and family-like atmosphere and agreed that their stints as FOMs will be an advantage in their new roles. ? “Having been a Field Operations Manager, I can communicate issues to other FOMs about properties so they can relay that to the crews,” Jarret said, adding that from mowing and mulching to edging and trimming, “I wouldn’t ask them to do something I wouldn’t or don’t know how to do. That’s why I think communication is so important.” ? Their experience as FOMs ultimately benefits our Commercial Maintenance customers. ? “When I’m out on property or talking to a client, I can better explain our process of how we do things and give them a better understanding of what needs to be done and the timeline it will take to get it done,” Will said, noting the importance of building and maintaining positive client interactions. “We want customers to be able to trust us with anything they need or want done on their properties.” ? Check out the work that Will, Jarret, and our entire account management team can do for your commercial property at www.hatcherlandscape.com. #CommercialLandscape #CommercialMaintenance #Excellence #CareerGrowth #CareerDevelopment #CareerAdvancement

A man saw a boy on the beach throwing starfish back into the ocean. When the man asked why, the boy explained that if he didn’t, they would die. The man pointed out the futility of the effort given the vast number of starfish and the miles of beach. The boy responded by throwing another starfish into the sea, saying, "I made a difference to that one." Inspired, the man joined in, and soon others did too. By the end of the day, dozens of people were throwing starfish back into the ocean. This story shows that every small action matters. Each effort can create a positive impact, and collective actions can lead to significant change. Let's keep making a difference, one step at a time, and inspire others to do the same.
