Computing report cloud datacentre emissions are much higher than reported: https://lnkd.in/eXt3tmdK This is of course a "zero defecation, Holmes" moment for those of us not caught up in the hype of "cloud is better and if it's more expensive at least it's more environmentally friendly". Of course the latter wasn't true, any more than the cheaper claim was[1], but it made for a good excuse for those riding the hype cycle or looking for a way to make their job mostly about saying "those providers are the problem" while having only the vaguest notion of what said providers do. You want high value/high return/lowest environmental impact IT solutions? There's absolutely no replacement for having the skills to do that in-house (even if neither the skills nor the house have to be yours). [1] Sure you could calculate it as cheaper, but only if you were speccing your own (on-premise or 3rd party hosted) kit really badly; in the end resource is resource, and resource+profit margin+reseller/salesperson margin isn't cheaper.
