Looks like the word is getting out—our renovation of The University of Georgia’s McBay Science Library 4th Floor has officially been crowned “Best Study Spot” in the The Red & Black Most Best Awards! A big thank you to the Athens community for recognizing a space that’s quickly become a favorite for University of Georgia students needing the perfect place to study, collaborate, or just find a quiet moment to focus. ? Since the renovation, library visits have soared by 42%— a testament to the impact that thoughtful, student-centered design can have on academic life. From ergonomic seating and quiet zones to lighting designed to reduce eye strain, every element was chosen to create a comfortable, energizing environment for those long study sessions. ? We’re so glad to see students making it their own and thriving in a space designed with them in mind. https://lnkd.in/eRtvDrYy The Red & Black Publishing Co.

NBBJ Design’s Westmark School is Designed for Learning Differences. The global firm’s Los Angeles–based studio worked with landscape architects SWA to create an education space dedicated to both physical and emotional well-being. The lower school campus of the Westmark School, a private academy in Encino, California, dedicated to supporting students with learning differences, is a model for charting a new direction. Not just for educational architecture, but for any type of building. Embracing research in neuroscience, education, and architecture, the facility addresses learning challenges from top to bottom, from incorporating nature and natural materials to encouraging multi-sensory learning to limiting stressors like excess noise and clutter. https://lnkd.in/eqz8ApSP

The 7 principles of #UniversalDesign: 1) Equitable use: identical operation for everyone not just "separate but equal", and make the design appealing 2) Flexibility in use: empower choice in usage, improve accuracy of usage 3) Simple and intuitive use: consistency and simplicity including language skills and literacy, also effective prompting and feedback 4) Perceptible information: redundant info presentation and feedback, maximize "legibility", compatibility with reading methods 5) Tolerance for error: minimize hazards and errors, provide warnings and fail-safes 6) Low physical effort: minimize repetitive or sustained physical effort, and let people remain in a neutral body position 7) Size and space for approach and use: accommodate hand, grip, and easy line of sight for all people, including room for assistive devices and personal assistance These design principles guided the building of the Ed Roberts campus at UC Berkeley. Up to 90% of the space on a typical university estate can be classed as ‘non-teaching’ space – whether that’s libraries, research labs, shared social spaces or offices. And here’s the kicker – these are the spaces that as space managers, we often find it hardest to measure good use of! For one, we can’t count ‘bums on seats’ (or to use space-lingo… occupancy rates) to calculate utilisation rates. And that’s really just the start. Post-pandemic, we’re all trying to work out what the university campus of the future might look like. A big part of that is figuring out the effect of our more ‘hybrid’ world on communal campus space. Will we start to need less of it? Or should we be using it in different ways to encourage more students back onto campus? This topic poses so many questions, which is why we recently brought together some of space planning’s razor-sharp minds to help us unpick it in more detail. Then we rounded everything up into a handy 5-minute read that we think will give anyone in university space planning some food for thought. Read it here - and tell us your biggest non-teaching space challenges in the comments?? https://buff.ly/3OZdb3r #Escentral #SpaceManagement #SpacePlanning #NonTeachingSpace #SpaceUtilisation #Campus #University #Blog
