Understanding the Causes of Childhood PTSD: A Closer Look Childhood PTSD is a serious and often a misunderstood condition that can arise from a variety of traumatic experiences. Natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, or hurricanes can leave children feeling helpless and terrified, stripping away their sense of security. Exposure to violence, whether at home, in the community, or even witnessing it from afar, can instill deep fear and anxiety. Accidents, such as car crashes or severe injuries, can be just as traumatizing, leaving children to relive those frightening moments long after they’ve passed. Neglect is another, often overlooked, cause of PTSD in children. When a child’s basic needs for love, care, and safety go unmet, the emotional neglect can be just as damaging as physical harm, leading to lasting emotional scars. These events can shatter a child’s world, leaving them to grapple with intense feelings of fear, confusion, and isolation. The effects of such trauma can be long-lasting, impacting their emotional development, relationships, and overall well-being. As caregivers, educators, and mental health professionals, it’s crucial that we recognize these potential causes and intervene early. Providing a safe, supportive environment and access to appropriate care can make all the difference in helping a child heal and reclaim their sense of security. Let’s continue to raise awareness and advocate for the mental health of our youngest and most vulnerable. How can we better support children who’ve experienced trauma? Your insights could make a difference. ???? #ChildhoodPTSD #MentalHealthAwareness #TraumaRecovery #SupportKids #NaturalDisasters #ViolencePrevention #ChildWelfare #MentalHealthMatters

May is Mental Health Month. Mental Health is Physical Health and Health is a Human Right. I'm a trauma therapist and the ACES study conducted by Kaiser is something that clearly shows the correlation between how what happens to us in childhood can stay for the rest of our lives in various ways. https://lnkd.in/gdtupBxM Today I came across another post where another health provider did a similar study with over 100k patients and they had a 35% reduction in doctor's visits and 11% reduction in visits to the emergency room, simply by adding the ACES questionnaire to their intake packet. In a recent Somatic Trauma Healing Immersion training I went to Gabor asked our audience how many of us had a health condition, which was maybe 1/3, and then how many of their doctors asked about ACES, and that was maybe 5% of the third. If you have experienced trauma and you are seeing it show up in your physical health please talk to your medical provider. If you would like to work on your mental health and are in CA you can book a session with me through my website link below. When I started working through my trauma I saw an improvement in my autoimmune disease. While I can't guarantee outcomes, from my own experience, I know that healing is possible. I will be posting more about ACES to my website and social media. OvercomeAnxietyTrauma.com

Today, our staff took part in Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training, through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This important training equips us with the tools to support youth aged 12-18 who may be facing mental health or substance use challenges. Did you know that 1 in 5 teens live with a mental health condition, and 50% of all mental illnesses begin by age 14? MHFA helps us recognize signs of anxiety, depression, substance use, and more, and empowers us to respond with a 5-step action plan. By learning how to identify and support youth in crisis and non-crisis situations, we are building a stronger, more supportive school community. #BeTheDifference Learn more about this initiative here: https://lnkd.in/dwy2rAn Get resources here: https://lnkd.in/eGVaCjY

Balanced ME? with Ayo Lawrence - May 9th 2024: Journey to Wholeness I There is a saying that the journey of a thousand miles begins with just a step!!! In the same vein, the Journey to Wholeness starts with coming to terms with the need for help and boldness to pursue the same. There is a lot we shall be unpacking in the next couple of weeks and I am hopeful that before the end of this unveiling, a lot of us would have intentionally kickstarted our journey. So let us dive in. Individuals that have gone through Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) which can be in the form of physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, having a parent who has alcohol use disorder, having a parent who’s a victim of domestic violence, having a family member who is incarcerated, having a family member diagnosed with a mental health illness and experiencing divorce of parents have experienced Trauma as all these count as such. Do note that the more the trauma an individual experiences before 18 years old, the more they are likely to experience Adverse Adulthood Experiences (AAEs), which includes addictions in all its shades and forms, substance use disorders and mental health disorders. The 10 ACEs outlined above are not the only possible traumas experienced in childhood. We also have racism; bullying; major loss such as a death of a parent, sibling, or caregiver; being involved in an accident; and community violence. All these also play a part in how an individual comes to see and understand the world as either a safe and nurturing environment or somewhere to be cautious and reserved due to fear of what’s to come next. I will encourage you to sit with the list above to ascertain the areas you might have indeed experienced trauma and make a list of them? Please do not say 'Oh these things are common, especially amongst those of us in Africa. They are no big deals' - They are and are holding a lot of individuals bound. This exercise of sitting with yourself and looking through the list above is crucial as it will open you up to what has happened to you, so we are kicking off from here.???? Next, I will want you to ask yourself this question, ' Based on the list I have penned down, do I need to embark on this Journey to Wholeness? N.B. Remember 1 Adverse Childhood Experience is a trauma???? I will stop here for this week. Till next time, keep LIVING, LOVING, LAUGHING and THRIVING. Balanced ME? with Ayo Lawrence is about LOVE, LIFE and EVERYTHING in between.

Tangible Action. Mental Health Awareness Month. Here are a couple things you can do: 1) Check in with a veteran friend/person from your past (email, text, call, whatever) 2) Take a class on mental health awareness - local agencies have classes like https://lnkd.in/g9ababJe 3) Make a self care plan. And utilize it! There's a lot of talk about stigma, and talk about talk, and acknowledgement that mental health is a problem but action is what's most impactful.

REGISTER TODAY at iskzoo.org/events to take Mental Health First Aid for Adults on JULY 25! Why is Mental Health First Aid so urgent RIGHT NOW? A CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation poll says 90% of Americans feel we are in a mental health crisis. And people in need aren't being reached. Researchers at Pew call serious mental illness (SMI) "a crisis of care." While we have effective medications, psychological treatments, and rehabilitative care, LESS THAN HALF of people with SMI are getting help. MHFA for Adults teaches how to identify, respond to and help someone experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. REGISTER TODAY FOR MHFA for ADULTS at iskzoo.org/events.
