This concrete block retaining wall was failing and bulging inwards slightly. It supports the area below a driveway and the home's rear foundation wall was to the immediate right in this photo. Various large step cracks and missing mortar were apparent. Someone attempted to help hold this wall in place by using some wood framing and crossing their fingers. This issue is often related to expansive soils outside this area pushing inwards on the wall. Failure of this retaining wall could adversely affect the home's foundation immediately adjacent to this area, plus someone standing nearby could be injured (or worse). When it comes to temporary support, sometimes more is more! This forest of temporary shores has been installed to allow heavy equipment like an excavator, which would normally overload the structure, to drive on the parking garage roof slab above. The unusually large number of shores are required due to this being a ‘waffle’ slab.
