As I meet many new incredible founders launching startups, I'm constantly going back to this message from Eran Bielski GP Entrée Capital about mission-driven founders. Mission-driven founders are a different breed, it's what keeps them going when it's rough and want to give up. There's no real way to see if a founder is or isn't but usually, it's something from childhood, or a chip on the shoulder, that makes them have this mission and change the world. Founding teams drive startups forward. If simplicity is key, why do multi-founder teams often outperform solo founders? It’s about momentum. As Paul Graham said, "Startups are like sharks; when they stop swimming, they die." Larger teams are less likely to hit days where progress stalls, avoiding quicksand (Replacements movie reference). For founding teams, we prioritize high-trust, complementary founders who communicate at high bandwidth to minimize complexity as they scale. Thoughts from the slopes: Focus. Many founders run like a little pup after the next ball. This was the same for me at most of my startups. You don’t need three product propositions and four audiences. You need one. Focus on what your company should be in 3 or 5 years. ‘Oh, we still have some customers for our early product’ ‘We can do this, and that, and the other thing so we don’t want to exclude revenue potential’ My favorite: ‘We want to do A, but the VCs we talk to prefer B, so we do both’ Sounds familiar?
