Update: It is important to call out the good in this situation. I am so proud of our community for coming out to show their support. It is because of you that shut down the negative comments and turned this around for positive dialogue and promote change in our industry. Huge shout out to the goons at Defcon that assisted me. And the hotline for helping think clearly and come up with a path forward. I appreciate all the love and support. I’m going to be real with you. Yesterday at defcon I had a full blown panic attack on the floor of defcon. When I saw people I though were friends laughing and cracking jokes at this. And have spent the last 24 hours mostly crying in my room. I feel so alone in this. The comments like “this isn’t harassment” or if a camera was in my Face I’d put on a show” are hurtful. Shame on you! If Anyone laughs or makes a joke on this thread you ARE NOT my friend. Shame on ZeroNetworks! Edit - because so many people didn’t real or understand. And I’m being generous here because I’m struggling to believe that so many people I called friends think it’s funny . Here is the TLDR: It’s not about the swag. The swag was in poor taste. It was the delivery. It was insisting on keeping the camera in my face AFTER I said I didn’t want them to. It’s about not respecting bounties. And it was the innapropreat comment from the guy holding the mic wearing the cardboard costume saying “what are you planing on doing with those later?” On camera. Most importantly- I am not doing this for me. I am calling out bad behavior because I CARE about our industry and the people in it. Original Post below I just want to share my experience with the marketing stunt they pulled at BlackHat. Mind you this is a Professional workplace setting. With people of all backgrounds and meant to be an inclusive and space free of harassment. Let me describe the scenario. You’re walking around with the goal of talking to vendors and seeing what types of fun they may be up to. Get to know their companies and see what they are working on. And a guy is holding up a big sign that reads “Free handcuffs” – Oh that’s strange, curiosity got the better of me and I stepped forward. AND a few people involved have cameras and microphones and wants to subject you to an on the spot interview I DID NOT consent to. I said I didn’t and they say this is the price. But I’m thinking who are you broadcasting this to? Who’s watching and where will this be posted? All happening in a matter of a few seconds. I can’t speak to any others who may have experienced this but I can share my feelings. I have questions. (Questions cut for text space and promote positive engagement) Yeah NO! This is NOT OK! This is harassment, this is making Blackhat an unsafe environment and is completely unacceptable. Shame on you! Block list for inappropriate comments: Roy C. Take your comments elsewhere!
