Teaching, Learning, and Curricular Innovation

As a campus violence researcher, I learned that anger is one of the most common factors that motivates perpetrators of mass shootings. There has been a normalization effect of gun violence in the U.S. that provides identities for people with suicidal tendencies. Mass shootings become the final act for some who want to end their life. We often try to rationalize a shooter’s irrational behavior by concluding that the perpetrator has a particular profile. Most perpetrators are male. Besides that, there is no common face or profile of a mass shooter. One of the greatest measures to prevent these tragedies is to improve our systems of healthy human connections so that potential perpetrators don’t relate so much with past perpetrators.
