?? Project Spotlight! NJ Department of Environmental Protection interviewed Project Manager, Mark J. Sprengel, about our work on the Liberty State Park Revitalization Program. Environmental Scientists, Kali Primiani and Mathew Heye, are featured in the below reel performing a slug test in the Central Railroad of New Jersey Train Shed. This test will aid in determining #groundwater recharge rates in the surrounding aquifer so accurate pumping rates can be calculated for dewatering during inspection of foundation piles which will be needed when restoring this historic structure. This program will transform #LibertyStatePark by adding one hundred acres of active recreational, arts, and cultural spaces along its perimeter, with a vibrant central park at its heart. The development will not only create world-class natural landscapes that bolster #resilience against flooding and #climatechange but also provide valuable spaces for local communities to engage in #recreation, #education, and #culturalenrichment. This project aims to significantly enhance quality of life for nearby residents, offering them greater access to green spaces and opportunities for connection and learning. Matrix is thrilled to be apart of such an impactful and exciting project! Interesting data driven blue and green infrastructure presentations from natural England, paddle uk, canal and river trust, Engage Liverpool and Liverpool university today. This slide demonstrates everting I’ve worked for in the last few years. People need to engage with and love nature on their doorstep before they engage and want to protect nature within a regional or national level. This is why transforming forgotten verge space on street corners is so important. The big green elephants in the room, that I will spend my last breath revealing and trying to do something about are: - none of our efforts will work if plants and trees aren’t looked after. The community want to do this but don’t have the resources or time to do this without support. We need to fix maintenance budgets before we plant any more. - there are not enough people with landscape skills to plant all the green infrastructure that we need. This issue will cause flooding when our cities are covered in SUDS. Where are the training programmes? - It is not enough to map or provide land that is green. Lawn is a monoculture and pretty unusable for most of the year. We should only map land that is high quality (brownfield often better than greenfield) and is connected to other high quality spaces by accessible, safe, attractive, inclusive active travel and wildlife corridors

Nice to see a softer urban edge cleaning water at the new Aquarium floating wetlands at the Baltimore Harbor. For it to be more than symbolic we need more of the same. The Third Bay Bridge will release a torrent of suburban sprawl within the sensitive watershed of the Free State. No one has studied the ecological impact of all the new strip centers, flex space development, spec offices, housing subdivisions, outparcels, etc… and all the ensuing new road work the new bridge will provide access to in the future. Whatever happened to the 2020 growth bill ? Whose job in the State bureaucracy is it to protect the watershed and encourage focused growth with dense footprints (build cities and towns) while leaving the watershed alone to thrive ? Baltimore has lots of developed land the needs to be reworked. Crickets… Guv ? https://lnkd.in/eKvWvSmn

Do you manage stormwater for a community? Have you considered a Green Infrastucture master plan? The idea of slowing down and soaking in can happen on small and big sites, and as we continue to incorporate green infrastructure, we can maximize the benefits by planning for the long-term goal of having these measures work together. Urban development impacts can be reversed with the adoption of a treatment train, and planning not only to incorporate green infrastructure but also to connect these BMPs to high priority areas. https://lnkd.in/gNDGs27K

New York City Council Member Gale Brewer introduced Resolution No. 364 on April 18, 2024, urging the State Legislature and Governor to create and enact legislation that would initiate a tax incentive program to encourage developers to plant new trees in development sites. The resolution highlights the environmental and health benefits of urban trees, such as air pollution filtration, flood reduction, cooling effects, and respiratory health improvements, as reported by The Nature Conservancy in 2021. It also references NYC's flood resiliency guidelines and initiatives like MillionTreesNYC, which aim to increase the city's tree population. Currently, while developers are required to protect or replace existing trees during construction, there is no mandate to add new trees to sites previously devoid of them. The proposed legislation seeks to address this gap, noting the significant cost—$3,600 per tree—as cited by NYC Parks during a 2022 City Council hearing.

Today's Did You Know in Commercial Real Estate Brownfields are abandoned, idle or underutilized commercial or industrial properties where past actions have caused environmental contamination, but which still have potential for redevelopment or other economic opportunities. According to the New York City Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, the city has over 3,000 vacant commercial and industrial properties and more than 7,000 properties designated as subject to mandatory environmental study and management. Perhaps as many as 40 percent of these properties are chronically vacant or underutilized contaminated land, commonly known as brownfield sites. New York City has a brownfield cleanup and redevelopment program that engages communities to reclaim land for development, offer an opportunity to benefit the environment, improve the health of neighborhoods, and attain more equitable and sustainable economic development. As a result of new funding, we were able to award a second round of culvert replacement grants for municipalities! It's very exciting. Recent flooding in Vermont, in central Massachusetts last year, and of course along the path of Helene reminds us of the importance of storm-smart road-stream crossings. The more we invest in culvert replacements now, the better off our communities will be when flooding inevitably hits Massachusetts. Also, the thousands of undersized / perched / failing culverts in Massachusetts result in death by a thousand cuts (25,000 cuts, actually) to aquatic ecosystems.
Exciting news for ecological restoration! Today, over $2.4 million was awarded to advance culvert replacement, dam removal, and wetland restoration projects in Massachusetts. ?? Over $2 million went to 17 municipalities through the Culvert Replacement Municipal Assistance Grant Program and the Culvert Replacement Training Site Initiative. ?? $344,000 went to two wetland and river restoration #DERPriorityProjects – the Herring River Estuary Restoration Project in Wellfleet and Truro and the South Middleton Dam Removal Project in Middleton. DER is thrilled to be able to advance restoration by supporting and working hand-in-hand with our partners. Together with $2.1 million awarded to municipalities in August, this recent announcement adds up to nearly $4.2 million invested in culvert replacement, small bridge improvements, and technical assistance in 2024 alone. There is no question that planning reform is long overdue. The Colne Valley Regional Park welcome the pledge of the government to act on this, but draw their attention to the unintended consequences of their ‘Grey Belt’ proposals: This will cause ‘planning by dereliction’ where landowners deliberately allow landscape quality to decline in the hope of gaining permission for development. How can the definition of 'Grey Belt' in National Planning Policy Framework avoid these unintended consequences? https://lnkd.in/ecUgdRM4
