In the U.S., declines in math and science performance among fourth and eighth graders—measured by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) operated by IEA's TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College—proved worrisome. But, as the center's executive director, Professor Matthias von Davier, said to "The New York Times," it's not unusual for larger, wealthier nations to grow at slower rates than smaller, developing countries. Back in the game after a two-year break! I returned to competitive math by participating in Simon Marais Mathematics Competition's East Division. Scoring 25 points, I ranked 86th out of 506 individual contestants, placing me in the top quartile. This was also the third-best performance among participants from HKU. "What's the minimum time it takes to cook three flatbreads (chapati)?" We concluded the seventh session of Sci-Pi Scholars' Support Hour on 31 August 2024. Joined by 2 scholars and tutor Rahul Bhujel, we delved into topics including the Area and Volume of Pyramids (Mathematics) and Gravitational Force (Science). As we were about to conclude the session, Mr. Bhujel posed an intriguing question to the two scholars, "Considering cooking one side of a flatbread requires a minute, what is the minimum time to cook three flatbreads with two stoves?" Want to join us as a volunteer tutor and make an impact on the life of these scholars? This past week marked a significant milestone for my students as they completed their Middle of Year testing. Their scores and the class data is proof of their hard work and growth. In the NWEA MAP assessment, a remarkable 82% of my scholars have met or exceeded their projected growth in math, while 59% have achieved the same in ELA. Notably, our class's median percentile has increased in both subjects. In math we have advanced from the 21st percentile to the 41st percentile, with an average score just three points shy of the national average. Similarly, in ELA, we have progressed from the 24th percentile to the 31st percentile. On their iReady assessments in December, 29% of my scholars reached their ANNUAL typical growth score in ELA and 21% of scholars accomplished the same milestone in math. Measured by the same assessment, 50% of my scholars have grown 1 grade level in math and 29% have grown 1 grade level in ELA. While acknowledging that there is still substantial work ahead, these results have invigorated me for the second half of the year. Ms. Skuthan's class is locked in and ready to achieve in the months ahead.
