It's beyond belief to me that every City that undertakes a major games event seems to use and follow the same rule book. Let's move the misery and suffering out of the city for a few weeks whilst the worlds media is here focusing on our city. Here we go again! Paris is cleansing the city of homelessness before the Olympics. As a country going through our worst ever housing and homelessness crisis in history, Brisbane has 8 years to throw this rulebook out and look at a more inclusive, dignified, compassionate and empathetic way to handle this. Ways to engage and provide opportunities through employment or volunteering at the games should be explored along with stable accommodation, leaning in and embracing our city. Together A truly Inclusive and Sustainable Games Highlights from their human rights statement suggests: - Build a safe, inclusive platform for social change - Engage with vulnerable and marginalised groups, primarily within Australia, to ensure the Games are inclusive to everyone - Facilitate the awareness and participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people living with disability, the LGBTIQ+ community, women and girls, older people, and culturally and linguistically diverse communities within Brisbane 2032 event planning and delivery. As the recent Olympics have concluded, and we see will soon celebrate the start of the Paralympics, we're reminded of the lasting impact to unite the world in a celebration of sporting excellence. While the Olympics have been a beacon of global unity, they've also faced numerous challenges over the years. As David Bernie, MKE, a valued member of our ED&I committee, reflects: "In 1984 Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee which led to the first modern games held in 1896.?The overall goal being to bring the world together in a celebration of sporting prowess and achievement and yet despite its mission to work for the?promotion of ethics and good governance in sport?and?to promote safe sport and the protection of athletes from all forms of harassment and abuse?it has courted and has had to navigate an ever changing list of controversies.?Historic scandals driven by socio-economic tensions, recent financial inconsistencies and how to react sensitively to how national and personal representations evolve over time.?While many may consider it an overwhelmingly positive influence it does not escape scrutiny, and nor should it, if every small change includes one more nation, one more group, one more person, then the Olympics will continue to deliver their mission. ? If an established organisation that was set up to build bridges can misstep, find room for improvement, then a company that is fighting to remain profitable and relevant should not be ashamed or fearful if there is more work to do.?After over a century the IOC still haven’t perfected it and they never will.?There will always be change. There will always be the next person asking for acceptance.?The important thing is that steps are made down the path because you will never get to the end - you just shouldn’t be afraid to start."
