Say hello to this year's teaching assistants ?? Vidan, Natalie, and Jackson are fresh grads from the Class of 2024 stepping into the role of teaching assistants this year. Being TAs lets them stay connected to the program and spend time in the place they now call home. They were remarkable students in their own year, and now they’re excited to share the frameworks and ideas that inspired them the most. For them, it’s a way to give back for the education and support they received from professors and TAs who always went above and beyond to help them during their school year. At the Masters in Branding program, we’re so grateful for students who step up to assist professors and guide students — day and night. The wonder, joy and enthusiasm they bring to the classroom is a testament to the deeply meaningful relationships they have built here with us. Here’s to passing the torch and inspiring the next wave of creative thinkers! Won't you join us next year? Applications are due January 15th!! I am always a Dean of Students at heart. This is why I am SO excited to share the graduate student focus groups I conducted in partnership with Kenneth Games & Jillian Baer at this webinar with NAGAP, the Association for Graduate Enrollment Management next week. You will get to see video of the students' reflections on applying to graduate school, but here is a sneak peak at a few quotes: "I think applying to undergrad was easier…what made undergrad easier was having a Common App. So, if there was something like that for grad school, that would be very helpful." "I think it was definitely very stressful. And it's very different than applying to colleges for undergrad for me." "…every single school had completely different requirements. That was very like, honestly kind of annoying…" "It was a kind of a stressful process...I applied for like multiple schools, and just the process of doing every single individual application…it's almost like a part time job." Timby Talk with Laina Tomei?? NU Extracurriculars: "I am the head of witness development in Mock Trial, a member of DECA, cohost of Keeping Up With The Pack, member of the American Marketing Association, an RA, a part of Greek Life, and a member of The National Society of Leadership and Success." Pre-College Nerves: "I was nervous about what the classes would be like. I wasn’t sure how to prepare from high school to college, but I promise it’s manageable!" Overcoming the Nerves: "I strongly suggest creating connections with your professors, this way if you have any problems with assignments you’ll be comfortable to reach out and they are always more than happy to help." Advice to a New Timby: "My biggest piece of advice for incoming freshmen is to get involved! Northwood is a great school that provides so many amazing opportunities, but you have to put yourself out there! If you think you’re interested in a club, just check it out! They can provide great friendships, experiences, and even scholarships."

In a recent op-ed, President Marvin Krislov writes "In my position, I have the honor of witnessing the growth and transformation of our students as they voyage through their academic careers. Each year, it is my greatest privilege to stand before our graduating seniors as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives — as that truly is what the meaning of a 'commencement' is." In less than a week, another semester starts for graduate students at Mizzou. Here is a list to get your semester on the right track: ? Plan your semester: what are you trying to accomplish this semester beyond your coursework? Think milestones for your degree, publishing, attending a conference, applying for external funding, etc. ? Plan work-life integration/balance: Add to your schedule time to decompress, sleep, and be with friends and family. ? Make sure to have scheduled regular meetings with your PI/advisor throughout the semester. If your advisor is more hands-off, you would be the one to suggest the check-ins and tell them why that is important to you. Think back to your semester plan so that you can align the meeting agendas to that. ? Assess who is in your mentoring network and see if there is anyone missing. Here are some types of mentoring you may need in your network: substantive feedback, championing of opportunities, accountability, role model, community, emotional support, and professional development. Don't forget your resources! From the Graduate School's GradEssentials programming to membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity's Dissertation Success Curriculum and more! Let's have a great fall semester!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Teaching is an INCREDIBLY hard job. It is complex, it moves at a break-neck pace, and the to do lists are never-ending. In my opinion, it will always be an underpaid profession, because the work isn't monetizable. How much do you compensate someone for changing lives? Teachers are the heartbeat of our communities, shaping our children's minds and hearts into the future leaders of our society. Teaching has always been hard work, and sometimes it feels thankless. Let's change that. If you have the opportunity this week, reach out to a teacher. Let them know how appreciated they are. Let them know they are valued and respected as capable professionals. Let them know you wouldn't be where you are today without great teachers-- because it's true. Thank you, teachers! (Pic: a gift from one of my students back in the day. I saved all of these sweet notes!)

From years of working with students on the "next"... NEIU is an excellent school choice for what's next after community college (or high school) for majors such as Business, Accounting, Biology, Chemistry and Graphic Arts. Anyone looking to be a grade school or high school teacher, 100% great pick. An excellent place to go to for pre-Med and pre-Law majors post community college, for a cost effective approach to getting these otherwise high-cost of education career pathways. From NO TAs/always real instructors, good scheduling, small class sizes, to being relatively easy to get to for a commuting student... and.... cost effective! Hands down a win-win-win. And, on the subject of costs...
Breaking barriers. For four years.

I recently had the honor of contributing a piece to the The Chronicle of Higher Education titled “Welcome to Campus. Now Get Out of the Classroom.” As the name suggests, it’s all about the power of real-world work experiences during your college years. Gaining hands-on, professional experience while you’re still in school is one of the absolute best ways to prepare for what comes next. Here’s a glimpse of what I shared in the piece: “Our idea of a four-year college is often focused around giving students the tools to become critical thinkers. We teach them concepts and arm them with a classical education, assuming they will be ready for the world. And we are right — students do need intellectual development to understand how to think, how to learn, and how to be contributing members of society. But that is not all they need. Students, their families, and employers, tell us that we should do more to connect intellectual development with professional development. That we need to teach skills that are career-related. When graduates find work in their fields, connected to what they studied, they are more likely to view college as worth it. And that is more likely to happen when they get professional experience outside a classroom.” Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/e6yBnFBW.
