We are horrified and saddened by the brutal rape and murder of the young trainee female doctor at her workplace in Kolkata. As we pause to celebrate freedoms, this inhumane act is a stark reminder of the dangers that women face in their everyday lives. It is unacceptable that women still have to live in fear of violence, even in spaces where they should feel safe. As women, as a business with a mission to support women, we condemn this act of violence in the strongest terms and stand in solidarity with the victim and all women who have suffered from such unthinkable atrocities. The recent developments in Kolkata have left all of us disturbed and distraught. It has, once again, gone on to highlight that it is simply not enough to have more women join the workforce – it is just as crucial to ensure that the workspace is a safe and inclusive space for women. The change needs to be systemic, rather than holding individual women responsible for their own safety. But while we work to make this a reality, there is still a long way to go. At #AspireForHer, we’ve always admired MukkaMaar’s initiatives and efforts in this sphere. #MukkaMaar has been a vocal advocate against gender-based violence for the past 8 years and has actively worked to empower thousands of young girls. With an estimate of 25 million girl children in India who are at risk every day, MukkaMaar hopes to reach all of them and give them the skills needed to confront gender-based violence and make it unacceptable. Somethings are always personal. Like the connection with diversity, equity and inclusion for me. Growing up in a patriarchal society … I understood early enough, there are things that are … just there. Things that don’t get questioned enough. That girls are implicitly expected to ‘manage’ with. What it means is that the society is failing you. So you just do … what you can. Ignore, cope, move ahead. And it feels like death by a thousand cuts each time: - Travelling in a public transport, a group of boys stares or jeers at you - Someone brushes past you, as you walk across the dimly lit street - A hand touches you inappropriately, due to the crowded space Each time when you cannot do anything. You feel the fear for your safety. At the same time disgust. And then deep seething anger. That you hope one day will get channelled into a step forward … towards social change. What happened in Kolkata… Should not have happened. And yet, till we don’t press for systemic changes. For law and policy changes. Nothing guarantees it won’t happen again. I wish there could be a magic wand to fix this. Till then to all the women… we need to speak up and do what we can!
