November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day, and it is an opportunity to deepen our commitment to reconciliation in a meaningful way. A question I often receive from clients and students is, ‘What are some of the things I can do to be active in supporting or demonstrating reconciliation and decolonization?’ One way to do this is by acknowledging and raising awareness around days of significance for Indigenous Peoples. Tomorrow, we have a chance to honour the Indigenous veterans who served and sacrificed, often unacknowledged, for a country that has yet to fully address its responsibilities toward Indigenous Peoples. As a champion for reconciliation, you can bring awareness to Indigenous Veterans Day in simple yet impactful ways. If you’re leading a meeting, consider incorporating a land acknowledgment that honours Indigenous veterans, or take a few moments to share their stories and contributions. Small acts like these carry forward the recognition Indigenous veterans rightly deserve and connect our daily work to the broader journey of reconciliation. Let’s be mindful and intentional with our words and actions tomorrow, sparking awareness and creating space for others to learn and engage in meaningful reflection. Together, we can make steps toward reconciliation, one respectful acknowledgment at a time.

Indigenous Veterans Day, observed on November 8, is separate from Remembrance Day (November 11) in Canada to specifically recognize and honor the unique contributions and sacrifices made by Indigenous soldiers, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, who served in the Canadian military during various conflicts. The reason for this distinct day stems from the historical lack of recognition and inclusion of Indigenous veterans in past commemorations and Remembrance Day ceremonies. For many years, Indigenous veterans were often overlooked in mainstream narratives of Canadian military history. Despite this, Indigenous people have served in disproportionately high numbers in both World Wars, the Korean War, and other conflicts, demonstrating tremendous bravery and resilience. After returning from service, many Indigenous veterans faced systemic discrimination, were denied the same rights and benefits provided to non-Indigenous veterans, and were met with significant barriers when reintegrating into civilian life. The establishment of Indigenous Veterans Day serves as a necessary acknowledgment of these past injustices and aims to provide a day dedicated to reflecting on and appreciating the vital role Indigenous people have played in defending Canada. It highlights their courage and the unique challenges they faced both during and after their military service, fostering greater recognition and respect within Canadian society.

As we head into this Veteran's Day weekend, I wanted to share the history of this Federal Holiday. Many people think it's about BBQs with family and friends. It's more than that. Like most American holidays, there's a backstory, and it's usually interesting. Remembrance of the past helps us see pitfalls in the future. Please enjoy this article from the Department of Veterans Affairs. https://lnkd.in/dtFCEjH6

THEY ARE IGNORING THIS THIS IS THE POLICY OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT. THE HYBRID NATION JUST PASSED A LAW TO STOP UNWRA, AND THEY HAVE MANIFESTLY FAILED TO PROTECT THE CIVILIAN POPULATIONS OF THE GAZA STRIP AND WEST BANK. IN FACT THEY ARE COMMITTING GENOCIDE. THIS LAW OR UN EDICT (R2P) SHOULD BE ACTED UPON WITH HASTE IF THE UN HAS ANY TEETH LEFT AFTER THE HYBRID NATION KICKED THEM OUT WITH THE BLIND LOYALTY OF THE USA AND THE UK. THERE MUST BE A LEGAL EAGLE THAT COULD EMBARASS THESE NATIONS THAT ARE HAPPY TO PRETEND AND"IGNORE THE R2P" Box 2 - The Responsibility to Protect At the UN World Summit in September 2005, Heads of State and Government of all UN member States signed up to the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P). This concept recognises that States are primarily responsible for protecting their own populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. The international community should help them to exercise their responsibility and use peaceful means to promote protection, but if peaceful means are inadequate and national authorities are manifestly failing to protect their populations, collective action can be authorised by the UN Security Council.reak,
"We must remember those who will never see that smile again." Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns, honoured the vital contributions of those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Today on #IndependenceDay, we celebrate the freedoms that we as Americans have come to know and love. At DAV, we are grateful for the generations of men and women who have served our country to protect these freedoms, often times returning from their service ill or injured. It is our patriotic duty as Americans to ensure that our nation keeps its promise to care for these brave individuals after they have served their country. Learn more about how DAV is keeping the promise to America’s veterans at dav.org.
