In June, we got the Good Food NY bill through NYS Legislature - now, we need YOUR help getting it signed into law! ?? All people deserve access to healthy food that values workers, animals, and the environment. The Good Food NY Bill is the missing piece to transform public food procurement, and ensure that local farmers and municipalities can thrive in New York. This bill aligns perfectly with Governor Hochul’s food purchasing priorities like Executive Order 32, the 30% New York State Initiative, and Nourish NY, yet it’s still awaiting her signature. This legislation has widespread support from New York’s farmers and local governments, and it’s time to act. Let’s get the Good Food NY Bill signed into law! #GoodFoodNY Make the call ?? https://lnkd.in/g6GyY9cB Reference Links: Executive Order 32 https://lnkd.in/gDnACvka The 30% New York State Initiative https://lnkd.in/gHrBXESc Nourish NY https://lnkd.in/gQ-cZvWh

?? Good food colleagues! We’re closer than ever to passing the Good Food NY bill and urgently need to support our legislative partners to get it to the floor for a vote. We are eager to build a food system and supply chain that reflects our values, but session is almost over and the bill has not yet passed both chambers. Every year, millions in public dollars are going to "lowest bidder" food contracts in New York State. #GoodFoodNY would shift this to support local communities—smaller and mid-sized food operations, food workers, farmers, animals, and the planet. As @Madeline Janis recently stated at the first-ever Federal Good Food Purchasing Summit, “There is no reason why every dollar we spend in this country cannot result in good jobs, equity, and expression of our values—as well as a good, high quality product that builds local communities.” We agree! New York State is ready to put its $$ where its values are thanks to sponsors @Crystal Peoples-Stokes, @Michelle Hinchey, and @Liz Krueger. Join us to put some heat on to move this bill to the floor for a vote before session ends! bit.ly/GoodFoodNYactions

?? ?? ?? ?????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????? ?????????? ?????? This good thing does not have to end. The USDA’s Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) created a pathway for getting fresh, local meat and produce from farmers to people in need in countless communities across states, tribal nations, and territories. But, its funding will soon end. The EAT Local Foods Act would provide permanent funding for an expanded program with added support for administration and technical assistance like food safety training. That would be a powerful investment into local food systems. Tell your member of Congress how the EAT Local Foods Act would benefit your community and ask them to support its inclusion in the next farm bill! Exciting news for Austin! ?? Earlier this month, the Austin-Travis County Food Plan was passed by the Austin City Council, marking a major milestone for our community's health, equity, and sustainability. This comprehensive plan is the result of extensive collaboration between local government, food system leaders, advocates, and residents, all working together to create a resilient food system that benefits everyone. The plan sets 9 ambitious goals that address every aspect of our food system—from how and where food is grown, to how it reaches our plates, and what happens when food is wasted. As part of the "Institutions" goal, I'm honored to be quoted in the plan on page 44, where I highlight Lake Travis ISD's participation in the Center for Good Food Purchasing's #GoodFoodPurchasingProgram. I’m so proud of the collective effort that went into shaping this important roadmap for our region’s future, and grateful for the amazing food system leaders in our community I've built and deepened relationships with along the way. Special shoutout to: Edwin Marty, Amanda Rohlich, MPA, Sergio Torres-Peralta, Angela Baucom, Hallie Casey, Diego DiVerde, Justin Lanier, Jarred Maxwell, my fellow Austin-Travis County Food Policy Board Members Joi Chevalier, Lisa Barden, Andrea Abel, Beth Corbett, Kacey Hanson, Larry Franklin, Natalie S. Poulos, PhD, RD, LD, Rosamaria Murillo, PhD, LMSW, Mark Bethell, Hilda Gutiérrez, MA SHRM-CP, Andy Smith, Matt Simon, and many more! The plan will soon head to the County Commissioners Court later this month for further approval. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue working towards a healthy, equitable, and sustainable food system! ?? State food policy and advocacy just got a whole lot easier ?? The Zero Food Waste Coalition, Divert, and the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic just launched the Food Waste Legislative Tracker. This new tool compiles pending legislation on food waste prevention, recovery, and recycling policies across all US states. ?? This tracker was created out of a shared frustration with the lack of transparency and the barriers that prevent people from engaging with local food policy. As someone who believes that food policy should be accessible and easy to navigate, I'm thrilled to see a tool that finally makes it possible for more people to get involved, find advocacy opportunities, and push for meaningful change at the local level. I've said it 1000 times, and I'll keep saying it - food policy should be easy to navigate and accessible to everyone. We need to remove the gatekeeping that often surrounds food policy - and this tracker is making that possible. Congratulations to Heather Latino, Holly Yanai and teams for putting together such a valuable resource! ?? So critical that advocates for local food production sustain the effort . . . Many will be involved in intensified advocacy work over the coming weeks, with an important series of deadlines re: local food supply and security. Feedback on the City of Melbourne draft food policy closes this week (13 March) and at the end of next month (26 April) comes the close date for submissions to the state government’s food supply inquiry, with its welcome focus on the peri-urban food system. (This is separate from the concurrent inquiry into food security, for which submissions are not yet open.)?Let’s trust that with strategic conversations and co-operation, we can mobilise around the opportunities in doing urban and peri-urban agriculture well. It’s a critical time for all three levels of government to work together in developing understanding and good governance that can support healthy local food production and supply. #foodresilience #urbanagriculture #foodsecurity #auspol #foodpositiveplanning Peri Urban Councils Victoria
