Mimicrete is an advanced materials science startup developing novel self-healing concrete. self-healing concrete solutions work to heal concrete cracks as soon as they open up, mitigating further cracking, subsequent structural issues and the need for repair and early replacement. this technology can both lengthen concrete lifetime and reduce the need for over engineering, repair and/or replacement. in turn, this reduces the amount of concrete used, related carbon emissions and lifetime structure monitoring and maintenance costs. Mimicrete helps the “world’s most destructive material” to become significantly more sustainable, without total reinvention of the product or supply chain. co-founded and invented by Dr. Liz Zijing Li FCIOB, who developed the technology during her doctorate at the Geotechnical and Environmental Research Group at the University of Cambridge. from a young age Liz had a real passion for learning about the natural world and its protection, and the manufacturing of concrete cement materials costs around 4-8% of carbon dioxide in the world. by making concrete more durable, it can drastically reduce the worldwide impact of emissions in the construction sector and create a more sustainable future. Sweeten | Sweeten Enterprise connects renovators with projects to the best local general contractors, then provides support?until the project is completed. also known as free renovation matchmakers, Sweeten helps homeowners find great general contractors, and once they’re matched, the platform makes sure projects are completed on time and on budget. they ask for references, research licensing, and conduct background checks to ensure any contractors they are matching will provide a high quality experience. sounds like a dream? many would agree with you, which is likely why today, Sweeten, manages nearly $3.5 billion in construction projects. founded by Jean Brownhill, who spent a decade working in architecture and construction prior to founding the company, her own challenging renovation inspired her to transform the construction industry and create a modern renovation experience. after suffering a botched renovation, she started wondering how regular people could ever manage renovating on their own. she also realized that on the other side, general contractors struggled to grow their businesses, often feeling pressure to take on jobs they lacked the expertise to handle. Agile Homes and Wiltshire Council working in partnership to deliver truly affordable, low carbon, modular homes as part of the council's house building programme, which will see over ￡200m invested in building new, energy efficient council homes up to 2030. Affordable housing is a key aim of the Council's business plan, and this scheme is a clear example of the work it's doing to make it a reality. We have submitted a planning application for seven affordable homes at a former brownfield garage site at Ramsbridge Crescent in Salisbury. The proposal is for seven low-carbon affordable homes built to Future Homes Standard 2025, using panelised fabric-first construction. The homes will be available to people who are in accommodation that is unsuitable for them and generates a significant cost to the council. One of the properties would also be a two-bed home designed for people with disabilities. This proposal will sit alongside 1970's concrete panel, prefabricated homes. It's a perfect setting to demonstrate how much modular housing has progressed, with vastly improved construction methods, use of natural, bio-based materials and fantastic thermal performance. As with all of Agile's developments, we're also able to deliver significant social value, by manufacturing panels in prison workshops for example, and massive environmental benefits, such as carbon capture (around 250 tonnes of atmospheric carbon in this development) by using natural materials, a biodiversity net gain of 47% and nutrient neutrality solutions agreed pre-submission. Standardisation is so indoctrinated in modular construction's ethos that it permeates not just into the design and manufacturing but critically to the business model as well.
