I'm a little tired of seeing neurodiversity, the diversity of human minds, described as a list of medical diagnoses, so here is a friendly reminder that neurodiversity isn't about shoving our infinite variations into medical boxes but about acknowledging all the different ways we exist and function as human beings. And if you're equally tired of not having language to understand neurodiversity outside of the pathology paradigm and the DSM, stay tuned as I'll be introducing the Neurodiversity Smorgasbord on all my social media channels over the next month. #Neurodiversity #Neurodiverse #Neurodivergent

It is important to understand the different ways neurodiversity can manifest. Neurodiversity is not a problem that needs to be fixed, but it can cause difficulties for a person who experiences it if they don't know how to manage it. When a client experiences sensory differences, for example, this can lead to dysregulation and difficult behaviors if not addressed constructively. Where some might see a "picky eater," the reality might be that the person experiences food sensations and tastes very differently and has trouble with certain foods for that reason. Some might say a child has difficulty paying attention, but the child actually has a receptive processing disorder. In the field of ABA, it is not a matter of making someone "appear" or "pass as" neurotypical. It is about helping the person develop tools and ways of understanding and communicating their own needs in order for them to be more successful and have greater satisfaction and control in their own life.

After participating in Health Tech for Patients 4 #HTFP4 where I shared how chronic diseases (in my case #HoFH among others) can affect our mental health, I’ll take part in the round table #11 in HealthTech Innovation Days 6 #HTID6 as FH Europe Foundation and Anhet.f patient ambassador. I’ll be discussing on behalf of patients with chronic diseases with experts for whom mental health is in the core of their work field about what happens inside our brain and what innovative solutions can help both #patients and #healthcare professionals that #policymakers should adopt in their course of action on a national level. As a patient with #HoFH, a #rare chronic disease, I know that #cardiovascular accidents (heart attack or stroke) can happen without any warning. This puts us in a non ending loop of overthinking and constant fear leading to #anxiety and #depression. For that reason, mental health #support should be part of the treatment to alleviate the burden of these diseases. You can join our discussion by registering through HealthTech For Care event’s link : https://lnkd.in/ec8hQw_3 #chronicdisease #raredisease #HoFH #cardiovasculardisease #heartsisease #CVD #Atheroscleroticcardiovasculardisease #ASCVD #atherosclerosis #heartattack #stroke #patientambassador #patientengagement #geneticdisorder #innovativemedicine #raiseawareness #earlydetectionsaveslives #personalizedtreatment #precisionmedicine #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #anxiety #depression #communitysupport #findingsolutions #betterhealth #mentalhealthmatters #meantalhealthprofessionals #healthcareprofessionals #endocrinologist #cardiologist #lipidologist #policymakers #accesstotreatmentforeveryone

I was honored to be considered for SRALab's monthly "Ask the Expert" series. See the post to learn more about aphasia, how to help patients with aphasia, and new imaging research we are doing!!
For our monthly “Ask the Expert” series, we asked our community to submit questions about aphasia — a condition that can occur suddenly after a stroke or brain injury and impacts a person’s ability to speak and understand language, reading and writing. Edie (Edna) Babbitt, PhD, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS, research speech-language pathologist at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, answers your questions — with insight on different types of aphasia, promising new research and how to support people with aphasia. Read our latest Q&A for more from Dr. Babbitt. bit.ly/4bHubnj #aphasia #asktheexpert #speechlanguage #research #speechtherapy
