From bicycling advocacy group WABA Biking for transportation has a few inherent indignities: helmet hair, that wet stripe up your back from an unexpected puddle, the occasional smear of chain grease on your leg. But the Business Geniuses?? in the Giant grocery stores corporate office have added a new one to the list: they won't let you shop with your panniers or backpack. This is actively hostile to anyone who doesn't grocery shop by car—you know, like most people who live in a city. Like locking up the deodorant and multivitamins, the policy is in response to an supposed uptick in retail theft that is simply not borne out by data.1 To me, it sounds like a short-sighted C-suite attempt at shareholder appeasement, but the failures of late-stage capitalism are outside the purview of this newsletter. Whatever flawed reasoning underpins it, it's not just bad policy because it's frustrating for people who bike. It's bad policy because it's absolutely saturated with opportunities for racially-biased enforcement and harassment. If you regularly shop by bike at Giant, make sure you've got a backup plan, or just shop somewhere else. You can also drop them a sternly-worded note, or ask your elected officials to weigh in against the policy.
